Product Description

From Amazon.com

Manhattan's rodent population is being terrorized by a vicious night monster, and Fievel's spending many sleepless nights worrying about his family's safety. In search of a little reassurance, Fievel accompanies his sister, Tanya, to her job at the local newspaper. What he gets instead is an assignment to accompany the fearless reporter Nellie Brie as she delves into the story.

Many frightening misadventures follow, and Fievel's family is placed in peril in the process. With a little help from Tony and Tiger, Fievel and Nellie track down the unexpected villain in the depths of the city's sewer system and, ultimately, put her out of commission.

This wonderfully animated, 76-minute made-for-video feature stars everyone's favorite American Tail characters and three pleasurable new songs by Michele Brourman and Amanda McBroom. Voice talents include Dom DeLuise as Tiger, Lacey Chabert (Party of Five) as Tanya, Robert Hays (Airplane!) as Reed, Thomas Dekker as Fievel, and Susan Hoyd as Nellie. This is a fast-paced, action- packed video that offers an insightful look at understanding, embracing, and conquering one's fears. It's great entertainment for ages 5 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining, Aug 19 2003

"The Mystery of the Night Monster" is an amazingly good/underrated film with a cheesy-sounding title. I found myself cheering on the awesome villain, the "creature de la nuit" poodle named Madame Mousee (or Mousey, but as we French speakers know, the name would be spelled Mousee and pronounced 'moo-say,' with an accent on the first e.) For that matter, whoever did the closed captioning and words for the "Creature de la Nuit" sing-along song did not know a thing about the French language and made many blatant errors even in the English lyrics. The song begins, "I'm the creature," not "from the creature." The song goes, "nouvelle chic," not "very chic." She says, "Regardes," not "hang out," and the word means "look," as in "look at me." The captioned words "we're starving" are incorrect; the lyrics are "C'est moi who rules the street," not "ce-moi." Ce-moi makes no sense. C'est moi means "it's me," as in "I'm the one who rules the street." "Powerful yet petite," not "colorful."

I think those were all the errors. Either way, I found her to be an incredibly fun character. The rest of the movie is humorous, charming, and overall well-done. Nellie, Reed, Fieval, Tanya, Tony, and Tiger blend together with other new characters and songs for a very fine movie. I would like to see the soothsaying Madame win though...

The songs in this movie are extremely good; in particular, the showstoppingly incredible "Creature de la Nuit," thought I must say I've had "Get the Facts" and "Who Will?" stuck in my head on more than one occasion. I thought these songs were much better than the Oscar-winning "Somewhere out There" in the original, so I can't quite understand why some people believe that one was better, but it is just one opinion. Also, the fact that Nellie and Fieval live amongst immigrant mice in the city and speak with representatives of various nationalities was NOT stereotyping! This could have been done tastelessly but wasn't. Why is it automatically stereotyping to include a Chinese mouse with a Chinese accent or a Scottish mouse talking about, well, Scottish things?! They were not portrayed negatively at all and weren't stereotyped. They were portrayed as simply who they were intended to be. So, excellent movie on the whole.

This review is from: American Tail:Mystery of the N (DVD)
When I ordered this movie I thought that I was ordering An American Tail - it says that is the name of the movie right? But I was very disappointed to find out that it is actually a sequel of some sort to the movie - this should be made clear. It has a subtitle that you can't make out in the thumbnail pic online.
