Product Description

From Booklist

There's no doubt that today's families can use some help in balancing the household finances, and the Economides family, headed by a former ad sales exec and his homemaker wife, deliver the goods here. To an extreme. As founders of the HomeEconomiser newsletter, the couple offers plenty of helpful tips on shopping and menu planning, saving, reducing debt, and cutting back on utilities. Most of Middle America, however, will probably find their habits overly harsh. Take, for instance, their shopping routine: they make one monthly trip to the grocery store, which takes up to five hours but costs them only $350. By freezing such items as milk, bread, and cheese for later in the month and using the more perishable fruits and veggies early in the month (saving such things as apples and carrots for the latter weeks), the Economideses feed themselves and their five children based on this one trip. Even though some tips advocate what others might consider garbage picking and mooching, any family with money issues will find useful information here. Especially helpful are their household budgeting techniques, adaptable to any home. Mary Frances Wilkens

Review

“Of all the how-to-do-it books ever written, the best and most constructively useful are the Bible, Voltaire’s Candide- and this one. The time is right, right now, for somebody to give us all a top sergeant lesson in practical economics: ‘There is no free lunch.’ Congratulations, Annette and Steve Economides: I pray your readers will practice what you teach.”

3.0 out of 5 stars A good beginner's guide, but offers nothing for finance savvy, Mar 26 2012

This review is from: America's Cheapest Family Gets You Right on the Money: Your Guide to Living Better, Spending Less, and Cashing in on Your Dreams (Paperback)
This book has helpful information for anyone just starting out to saving more money.

However, it is poorly written. Too many comments on their own writing, the kind that comes in a bracket following a sentence as a side note. This book would be better edited down to 100-150 pages. It can get confusing at times. It feels like talking to an out of touch housewife, she often got sidetracked into unrelated matters. I often need to read a sentence 3-4 times to understand what they are trying to say. e.g. There is an advice for parents with small children. She said cutting up food for children while her husband worked late is daunting. What? What kind of food are they feeding their children that require a 2-person operation? I read the paragraph several times, and I think she meant making meals composed with bite-sized pieces for everyone would be more sensible than having to cut up your children's meal at the table.

The book promised to be a guide to "living better, spending less and cashing in on your dreams". However, they seem to live very poorly. The kids are home-schooled, so they probably never knew better. The food that they eat seem to lack nutrition. I'd rather pay off my house longer than 9 years so I could feed my family with better food. It is wary that all their sons look shorter than their father.

Overall, it's got some good ideas. But nothing I don't already know. Most important thing is to spend less than you earn.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read, Aug 29 2007

This book states some obvious things, but is well worth the read. There are so many small tips and tricks that can make a real difference. It is divided up into sections like car, vacation and debt, so you can easily read more about your biggest concerns, or read the whole book and get a better handle on your finances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great info for anyone trying to maximize their money., Aug 19 2009

This is a great well organized book to get anyone thinking about getting maximum value for their money. It is not necessary to follow their strategies as much as to get thinking about new solutions to your needs. Some thing did not work for us (eg grocery shopping monthly and eating frozen food most of the time) but some were great ideas like car shopping and trying not to pay full retail price.
