Amazing Album,
By Candessa (Halifax, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Among The Living (Audio CD)
These guys are amazing - they're excellent live and on CD. This album has some amazing tracks, all written by one of the brothers in the band. Mile aMinute stands out as the best love song, and a warning should be beside Hold On, as it is one of the saddest songs ever written. Burning Bridges and So Confusing are fun and translate well into live atmospheres, and Among the Living and 5:07 are beautiful tunes. When the circus comes to town is absolutely hilarious, and aptly describes family reunions! I absolutely recommend this CD and guarantee that no one will be disappointed.

a "must have" album,
By Michelle (Toronto, ON, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Among The Living (Audio CD)
I think if I could have only one Sons of Maxwell album, 'Among the Living' would be it (but I still really recommend all the others -- they are all great). Dave Carroll has written some amazing songs, which take you through the full range of emotions. "When the Circus Comes to Town" will leave you laughing, "Hold On" will leave you in tears (or close to it), "Burning Bridges" introduces a positive outlook for the future and "Mrs. Stanley" recalls fond memories of a dear friend (to name just a few). There is also a really nice mix of slow and fast songs and the sibling harmonies between Dave and Don Carroll are second to none. I love the messages within the song lyrics, but I also enjoy being able to just throw the CD on and listen to it as background music, without having to really think about it (enjoy it just as music for music's sake). Earlier albums ('Bold Frontier', 'Live at Tim's House', 'Sailor Story', and even 'The Neightbourhood') featured a number of traditional songs, with a strong East Coast/Celtic influence. 'Among the Living' shows a move away from this sound, towards a more 'pop' sound that might best be considered part of the "adult contemporary" category of music. It will still appeal to fans of SOM's earlier work, but has a broader appeal as well. If you like Great Big Sea (in particular their newer music), you should definitely give Sons of Maxwell's 'Among the Living' a try.
