Book Description

A case-based text, now with terminology consistent with the APTA's Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, uses a holistic approach to the management of individuals with amputations. Concise yet comprehensive, it discusses traumatic amputations, juvenile amputees, and the management of individuals with peripheral vascular diseases. The 2nd Edition reviews the latest technological advances in prosthetic fabrication and provides information on relevant websites.

This popular textbook has been extensively revised: all component areas include new elements devised since the original publication; new photographs added; all references updated

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, Solid Approach To Learning About Prosthetics, Mar 21 2009
By

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Amputations and Prosthetics: A Case Study Approach (Paperback)
Despite or perhaps because of around 20 years serving patients with amputations, I found this book refreshing in a lot of ways in its presentation of the salient points of managing individuals with amputations. The experience of the author, a physical therapist, shows through in a positive way. There is a quick overview of conditions that lead to amputations. Then the primary emphasis of the book is on lower extremity amputations from partial foot, to transtibial, transfemoral, hip disarticulation, etc. Preop and postop concerns are discussed. Prosthetic components are viewed as well as troubleshooting and gait deviations. Upper extremity amputations are not reviewed with as much detail but there is an excellent, succinct overview of classification of congenital amputations.
The book does present cases but these are meant more as a focus for applying the principles discussed. There are illustrations that help although I did not find the stick figures that useful.
Overall this is an extremely worthwhile book that also provides websites to companies that provide different components.

Once again Dr. Bella J. May has proven that her knowledge of amputee related physical therapy is truly without peer. Dr. May shows us with precise text as well as clear illustrations the most advantageous methods of proceeding in difficult cases. Using the case study method, Dr. May indeed truly challenges the beginning as well as advanced student of this healing art.

Wonderful discussions on amputation...written with superb clarity. Would highly recommend to PM&R residents. This book is an excellent primer for PM&R residents before delving into Delisa and Braddom.

Required reading for studies in Amputations and Prosthetics. Coves a wide range though not in depth for every situation. Good text though.
