Review

'A highly engaging, sometimes poignant and sad chronicle of this remarkable man's devotion to abused and abandoned creatures during some 40 years tending these waifs and strays in Cornwall' -- Bookseller 'Avoids any cloying sentimentality while remaining rich in anecdote and humour' -- Sunday Express

Product Description

Rex Harper brings to life the story of the incredible animal sanctuary that he and his family spent more than 40 years building. From small beginnings, the Harpers' haven became a magnet for an extraordinary array of animal waifs and strays and was designated the official RSPCA center for Cornwall in the late 1970s, taking in more than 50,000 abused and abandoned creatures by the time Rex and his wife retired. In this tale he introduces us to the colorful cast of characters that have become his family—Patti the unlikely guard dog poodle, Odin the Machiavellian raven, and One Eye the seemingly indestructible cat. He describes, too, the dark side of his work as an RSPCA warden, chronicling some of the inhuman cruelty he witnessed during his years at the forefront of animal welfare in Cornwall. Inspiring and poignant, warm and witty, this evocation of life close to nature is a book that will touch—and sometimes break—the hearts of animal lovers everywhere.

I am really surprised there aren't more reviews for this book. It is utterly delightful. For anybody who wants to read about animals and get to know their personalities, you can't go wrong with this book. Curl up on the couch and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A warm book, Oct 8 2008
By M. F. J. Wezel "letterwolf" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: An Otter on the Aga (Paperback)
An Otter on the Aga is a tale about love for animals. How a husband and wife's team, wanting to care for strays and abondoned animals in Cornwall, ultimately led to the establishment of an RSPCA animal shelter.
The book is a collection of warm, happy and sometimes not-so-happy stories of encounters with the various animals the Harper family acquired and cared for over the years; the multitude of characters that caused them problems and yet gave them happiness.
'Though the title of the book is An Otter on the Aga, in my opinion it could well have been called Odin descends on Cornwall, as the tale of Odin the raven is one of the best in the book.
For animal lovers, this book is a must-have!
