I have several books on gears. This is the only one that covers the how and why of gear design. Covers design load calculations, max rpm, and life projections. The content has good depth, but the author presents the information as if he is having a discussion with gear experts instead of individuals with no background in gear theory. There are not enough diagrams for the subject matter to be readily followed. I used Mathcad to draw the involute curves described to fill in the holes. The book has the broadest view on the subject of gears availible, but is extremely slow reading.

The book is very good. Its technical information is fantastic, once they aren't found in recent publications so shallow nowadays.Excelent for those who want to go deep into gears subject.
