Product Description

From Amazon.com

This leisurely, sometimes-hilarious, sometimes-harrowing dramedy by Jordan Susman concerns the misadventures of college dropout Puck (Devon Gummersall), a would-be anarchist who lives in a commune with other free spirits and whose anti-authoritarian misdeeds amount to low-key street theatre. That changes with the arrival of Johnny Black (Dylan Bruno), a violent militant who eventually controls Puck and his friends, briefly lands them all in jail, and later develops a monstrous confederacy of skinheads, gun nuts, and environmental extremists. The marvel of this film is that with so much harrowing stuff going on, The Anarchist Cookbook is a gentle yet solid character piece set against a peculiar history--a modern-day Flaubert tale of a young man's sentimental education. Standout performances from John Savage as Puck's supplanted guru, Katharine Towne as the hero's unlikely Republican girlfriend, and Gina Philips as an omni-sexual monster who sleeps with everyone but the hero. --Tom Keogh

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadfully Bad, Jun 14 2004
This review is from: Anarchist Cookbook, the (DVD)
This movie is a complete misrepresentation of both anarchy as a philosophy and I hope it also misrepresents the way anarchists think. I'm not familiar with such a subculture as the one portrayed in this movie, but the logic employed by these characters is totally contrived, frivelous and ridden with cliches. Simply put, the writer is not smart enough to write to be writting about this stuff. I assure you that my hatred for this flick is not rooted in personal politics...its rooted in anger because I lost about 6 dollars to blockbuster and 2 hrs of valued leisure time. Anyone beyond a prepubescent brain capacity should NOT enjoy this movie. If anything, it has marginal comedic value as being a completely ridiculous joke but if that's what your looking for its still not very entertaining. That so many adults appreciated this film makes me very cyinical with regards to the general population and their capacity to think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Funny, Unexpectedly Good, April 17 2004

This review is from: Anarchist Cookbook, the (DVD)
This is a uniquely fun and original movie. But it requires an open mind. The thing that made it so good was that it subverted so many expectations. Instead of being a mindless manual on how to blow stuff up, the movie is about one guy coming of age in a hilarious and harrowing way.

PC people will probably not dig it. But anyone with a brain and a sense of humor will.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another view on the Anarchist Cookbook, April 10 2004

This review is from: Anarchist Cookbook, the (DVD)
I originally watched this movie as was recommended by a friend, and was sometimes humored by some parts. However, I was horrified by the ending, when suddenly this militant convinces everyone into a violent attack, and how he turns everyone in. I'm currently researching into the directors and the film more for evidence of a right-wing propaganda message within. There's skepticism towards the real Anarchist Cookbook (the book itself), and it would be no surprise if this movie was yet another anti-anarchism piece targetted at an anarchist/activist audience.
