How strange! Millions of people have been successfully using "beurriers bretons" for centuries. Why would it be so different with you? :-/
Did you change the water every 2 days, as recommended, or change it daily if your environment is warm (using fresh cold water, of course)? You do have a clean water source, do you not?
When using this ingenious pottery correctly, butter will easily keep well for at least 20 days' if you follow instructions.

This as been used for generations in Europe You put fresh water in the the top. then turn over the butter cup int the cover top and there it is the water prevents air and bacteria to get in contact with the butter. Mine (wish I had for many years now) keeps it longer then 2 weeks whe you change the water :) JUST GREAT PRODUCT every body should have I paid $20 for mine so this is a great price!

This was a replacement for a very old butter bell which had given great service, but got dropped onto a ceramic floor. I was delighted that it offered a wider mouth. However, the second time I filled it, I softened the butter a bit as usual, but as I pressed it into the bell, the bell split wide open from top to bottom! How disappointing. I would not recommend this design and have returned to the original one with a smaller mouth.
