Angel of Doom certainly relies on the reader having read at least some of the former novels in this great series to fully understand why Anna is doing the things she is and to fully appreciate her reputation constantly referred to by the other characters. In fact in Angel of Doom, Anna recounts to Christopher Nicole how she became quite the celebrity with her heroism from certain Reich assignments of the past being used as a propaganda tool by Hitler. Anna can no longer move around Germany, Poland and elsewhere with her identity unnoticed (although of course her beauty always was). World War II is coming to an end in Europe, many in the Nazi hierarchy can see the writing on the wall and all have different plans to use Anna as tool in these final days. Outside factors mean these plans don't run as smoothly as one would hope, throw in the fact that the Russians seem to want her more than they do Hitler and that the US has decided she needs to die so as not to divulge some of their actions and Anna has a hell of tale to tell! Of course she also needs to rescue her parents, otherwise what did she endure all these years of hell for?
Again Christopher Nicole has done a great job of mixing real historic events with what is probably his greatest fictional character. If you read the entire series, which you should, you will certainly have a greater education on the timeline of events in Europe before and during the Second World War. Granted maybe the character and the whole series is a little bit too far fetched to be 100% realistic but I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed this series containing one of the best written female heroines ever.
Although World War II is over (in Europe anyway) by the last page in this book some comments when we go back to the present time interview indicate that fans may well have a few more Anna Fehrbach adventures still to come. I hope so. If you haven't already done so go grab a copy of Angel from Hell then read the rest in the series in order to fully appreciate Christopher Nicole's creation. The rest of the order is Angel in Red, Angel of Vengeance, Angel in Jeopardy then this novel Angel of Doom. If you've read them all also check out Nicole's previous best female creation, the Jessica Jones series, and that series starts off with The Search.
