Book Description

Once you’ve seen, you can’t unsee.

Brielle went to the city to chase her dreams and found tragedy instead. She’s come home to shabby little Stratus, Oregon, to live with her grief and her guilt . . . and an incredible, numbing cold she can’t seem to shake.

Jake’s the new guy at school. The boy next door with burning hands and an unbelievable gift that targets him for corruption.

Something more than fate has brought them together. An evil bigger than both of them lurks in the shadows nearby, hiding in plain sight. Two angels stand guard, unsure what’s going to happen. And a beauty brighter than either Brielle or Jake has ever seen is calling them to join the battle in a realm where all human choices begin.

A realm that only angels and demons—and Brielle—can perceive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, fast-paced read! Nov 23 2012
Format:Paperback
I was riveted, captivated and drawn into 'Angel Eyes' more than I have been in a long time.

Okay, I'm honestly not sure how many times I can say OH MY GOODNESS in this review before I lose you. So.... I'll say it once more and be done... OH MY GOODNESS!

I've just recently became aware of this wonderful author. Shannon is a delight to tweet and Facebook with! I bought 'Angel Eyes' and added it to my 'To Be Read' pile (which is about 40 books deep) and placed it just under the last two book I've reviewed. I always love to read books by people I've had some interaction with. It seems to make the reading of the book even richer!

So, I turn on my Kobo and sit down to delve into this book by this great author I've begun to chat with. OH MY.... sorry. I mean, WOW! Almost from page one, I was sucked into this amazing story.

Brielle's world has been shattered. She's on the verge of shattering herself. She is just barely keeping it together. She tries to return to normalcy, but the cold and guilt won't go away. Brielle is so human and it resonated in me. She isn't a super hero, she has regular abilities... just like me.

Jake is the new guy. He seems so calm and put together and he somehow he has the ability to warm the deep chill in her spirit. He seems to appear wherever she is.

Brielle is content to push everyone away, but something about Jake keeps drawing her in. Is it just that he's cute? Is it the unexpected, shocking gift? Or is it even more than that?

Forces greater than both of them are in play and if they aren't careful, they will both fall to the enemy.

Shannon has a way of writing that is so personal. I felt as though I was Brielle. I love the first person point of view! (I used to write that way myself and have a fondness for it) I could almost feel the cold when Brielle was describing it. I felt my heart racing at her panic. Shannon has a wonderfully descriptive way of writing. I felt like I was seeing everything in front of my own eyes.

The forces of good and evil in this book held my attention. The point of view from the Angels is magnificent. I felt an almost overwhelming desire and longing to be one of the blessed ones who sit and work in the direct presence of the King. I pitied those who chose to abandon Him.

It was nearly physically painful to put this book down when I didn't know what would happen to Brielle, Jake or their angelic guardians.

I enjoyed this book immensely. There are almost no words for how much I enjoyed 'Angel Eyes'! It is a heart-pounding, jaw dropping read that I will be adding to the rotation of books I re-read once a year (at least!).

Thank-you Shannon for a beautifully written journey into Brielle and Jakes world! I'm sad that I didn't find out about your wonderful book sooner, but I am so glad to know that I don't have to wait long for 'Broken Wings'!! Even two months is going to feel sooooo long!

5/5 stars!! It almost doesn't seem like enough!

3.0 out of 5 stars A little preachy, but not bad Oct 12 2012
By Megan
Format:Paperback
When I first downloaded this book from Netgalley, I was apprehensive because it was categorized as religious. I'm always wary of religious books, but Angel Eyes was definitely worth the read. I thought it was a little preachy at the end, but for the most part, I enjoyed it, despite not being religious.

Brielle is extremely damaged after the murder of her best friend Ali and who can blame her? Angel Eyes is the story of her putting the pieces of her life back together, with help from a cute boy and some divine intervention. Jake was amazing (see more in the favourite character section). The secondary, celestial characters were well done as well. I felt safe with Canaan; he was the perfect Shield, or guardian angel. I had pity for Damien, despite his bad decision long ago, while still hoping for him to get what he deserved.

I enjoyed the growth Brielle exhibits through the course of the book. As she gradually begins to live again, she begins to take more action and control of her life. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys angel and demon stories and don't let the religious vibe throw you off.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review from Esther's Ever After Jun 6 2012
By Brenna TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Today I have my review for Angel Eyes by Shannon Dittemore as part of the blog tour for Shannon's debut novel! I've been really excited for this one ever since I discovered it on Goodreads a few months back. And I'm so glad that it lived up to my expectations!

Reasons to Read:

1.Shannon's effective way of writing:

I quickly noticed how precise the language Shannon uses is when I started reading Angel Eyes; not only does it flow so well, but it's as if each and every word has been carefully thought over and selected so as to best convey the meaning and imagery she's picturing. It brings the entire story to life, and completely immerses you in Brielle's frame of mind. And this is something so rare and skillful, that Shannon easily deserves praise for being able to achieve this (and do it so well, I might add).

2.THERE ARE ADULTS:

Hurray for parental involvement! This shouldn't be such a novelty in a YA book, but it is. Brielle has a handful of caring, attentive adults in her life who do pay attention to her and try to help her in any way they can- yet still recognize that she's an independent young woman. And I think you can sort of count Canaan and company as adults as well, and it's nice to see a couple teenagers that aren't completely on their own.

3.Fresh take on angel mythology:

But how different can it be, right? Angels have been done over and over in YA. And Shannon Dittemore uses part Biblical interpretation and part imagination to conjure up a new type of angel we haven't really seen in YA before. Angels are involved in the story, but they don't really take up center stage- they have their own role to play, which is actually based on other characters.

4.So much more than a paranormal book:

Similarily, since the angels in Angel Eyes aren't the focus of the story, it follows that there are other more important elements involved. Angel Eyes isn't just about weird paranormal activity, a battle between angels and fallen angels, or falling in love; it deals with grief, faith, doubt, and free will. And something kind of cool about that idea of free will is that it comes up in a couple different ways; it's a struggle for many of the characters, those who try to reconcile what choices they are able to make and those who have lost their freedom because of others who have taken that right away. It's fascinating and beautiful, and something that really raises some thought-provoking questions.

Angel Eyes is an interesting book because of the perspective Shannon took with writing it; she very clearly poured so much of her own experience into the book, and her own convinctions heavily influences the story. That might be difficult for some people to swallow, but I think it's intriguing to read a book from an author with this very different perspective. Angel Eyes is definitely influenced by religious thoughts, in this case Christian ideas, in the same way that many other books that include religious aspects are based off some of the author's own ideas and questions. And that's something I personally enjoy reading- but I can also see how it might be too heavy or uncomfortable for some people who strongly disagree with it. Is it preachy? No. I don't find it preachy whatsoever. It's the story of a girl with struggles surrounding faith and doubt, which is something just about every person will experience in their life. The difference is that not everyone will come to the same conclusion as Brielle- but I don't think that's a bad thing, to have a book written with this in mind.

I can, however, see how there are a number of archetypes included which are overly familiar to YA Books; the broken girl and the new boy who are driven together for some strange, supernatural reason. Love that blooms a tad too quickly for my taste, but I did appreciate that Jake was so sweet. He may tease, but he's thoughtful and genuine. He treats Brielle as an equal, but recognizes that she has needs and tries to help her with those as well.
