This is the best paranormal romance I've read in the past year. I don't like Nalini Singh's other book series (the psy-changelings), but I was completely blown away by this book.

In this world, there are archangels, angels, vampires, hunters and humans. There are 10 archangels who rule the world and their wings of angels. Angels are immortals. Angels Make vampires from humans, who have to contract to serve for 100 years in return for being Made immortal. When vampires go bad or break contracts, that's when hunters (whether hunter-born or hunter-trained) track them down.

Elena Devereaux is the top guild hunter in North America and her personal history has made her tough as nails while allowing her to remain human. Elena is hunter-born with unique abilities. Raphael is the Archangel of New York and appears to rule North America. Raphael is ruthless and omnipotent in his territory. When Raphael hires Elena to track an archangel gone bad, things get a whole lot interesting. Raphael can mind control Elena, but she'd rather break than bend. Because of her history, she's surprisingly resistant to a lot of his angelic influences.

Paranormal books are very common now. What made this book stand apart was Raphael's otherworldy allure and brutality, the beautiful scenes in the sky, Elena's tough compassion, and the shockingly good ending.

Anyway, can't say more or else I'd be giving away the plot. Amazing story, I'm a Singh fan for life now.

Nalini Singh is one of my favorite authors. I'm already addicted to her Psy-Changeling series, where she has managed to create a thoroughly original and engaging world, that develops more and more in each book.

When I learnt that she was going to write a new urban fantasy series, I couldn't help but think "Oh, no, Nalini will have less time to write the books I like!". All the same, I'm very curious, so I couldn't help buying and reading "Angels'Blood", the first novel in the Guild Hunter series.

Now, I have a problem: a new addiction that joins my previously existing ones to chocolate and Nalini's Psy-Changeling series. I simply loved "Angels'Blood", its characters, and the new world it introduces. The main character is Elena Deveraux, a plucky guild hunter that tracks down vampires that break their contracts with angels, the immortal beings that create them in exchange for a period of servitude. Elena is the best at her job, and due to that she attracts what might end up being the mortal attention of Raphael, probably the most dangerous and beautiful archangel in existence. Raphael demands Elena to do the unthinkable: track a rogue archangel. Elena cannot say no to that request (or rather order), that will involve working closely with Raphael, and bring unexpected developments.

On the whole, I can say that "Angels' Blood" is the beginning of a series totally different from the Psy-Changeling series, but, strangely enough, just as good. Highly recommended :)

Sometimes the first book in a series can be, to be quite frank, slow and tedious. It is VERY rarely the first book in a series that gets me hooked. It's usually the second, sometimes third book, that finally reels me in. Well, I was looking around for something to read, and remembered that Nalini Singh had another series apart from her Psy/Changeling series. Now, I'm up-to-date on the Psy/Changeling series, and I love it, but it also meant that I had already been aware of her other Guild Hunter series for a while now. So I was most definitely avoiding the other series for some reason or another - I do that sometimes and I don't know why. But finally I said "What the heck, Singh's a great para-rom writer, this series should be great too..." Whoa, I should kick myself in the shins. I was not disappointed, or I should say I was disappointed but only with myself for not reading this sooner. Angel's Blood, book 1 in the Guild Hunter series is fantastic. I loved the characters, the dialogue, the story, everything.

Some authors are not very good at re-inventing the paranormal world. Sometimes its uber-cheesy, sometimes it lacks originality, or sometimes it just becomes so complex and complicated you get a headache from recalling, remembering and thinking things through so much. Don't get me wrong, I like fresh interpretations of the paranormal world - keeps things interesting - but it has to be done properly and in an engaging fashion. Singh, in my opinion, has a great imagination. Her guild hunter series world is so coooool! This particular world includes vamps, angels, and humans. In this world, Angels and Archangels pretty much run the show. They're actually responsible for the creation of vamps.

ANGEL'S BLOOD by Nalini Singh

ANGEL'S BLOOD is the first book in Nalini Singh's The Guild Hunter series. Written in the Urban Fantasy genre, Angel's Blood introduces an exciting cast of characters including hunters, archangels, angels and vampires. A little darker and more violent then some paranormal, fantasy or urban fantasy storylines, Angel's Blood is a great premiere in for The Guild Hunter series.

Elena Devereaux is one of the best rogue 'vampire' hunters that the guild employs, but when the Archangel Raphael petitions specifically for Elena, she knows this is one job she cannot refuse. Raphael's authority and power is never questioned. But when a series of grizzly murders points to the Archangel Uram, Elena's abilities to hunt and track vampires, tops the list of hunters required to bring the 'bloodborn' Archangel to justice. With the ability to 'sense and scent' her prey, Raphael demands that Elena use her powers to track his one-time friend.

Throughout the storyline we meet the Cadre of 10 - the most powerful Archangels and the group of 7 (angels and vampires), who answer to and work for Raphael. Vampires are made, when an Archangel chooses to save a human life, or someone requests immortality, but payment is steep. Newly made vampires must serve their sire and when a vampire goes 'rogue', one of the Guild Hunters is called in to retrieve and return to their maker.

As the story progresses Nalini offers up a rather dark side of the paranormal, urban fantasy genre. Her description of the gruesome scenes, following Uram's attacks, is unsettling, but a necessary part of the story.
