If the devil is in the details, there's a lot of wicked fun in Angels & Demons, the sequel (originally a prequel) to The Da Vinci Code. Director Ron Howard delivers edge-of-your-pew thrills all over the Vatican, the City of Rome, and the deepest, dankest catacombs. Tom Hanks is dependably watchable in his reprised role as Professor Robert Langdon, summoned urgently to Rome on a matter of utmost urgency--which happens to coincide with the death of the Pope, meaning the Vatican is teeming with cardinals and Rome is teeming with the faithful. A religious offshoot group, calling themselves the Illuminati, which protested the Catholic Church's prosecution of scientists 400 years ago, has resurfaced and is making extreme, and gruesome, terrorist demands. The film zooms around the city, as Langdon follows clues embedded in art, architecture, and the very bone structure of the Vatican. The cast is terrific, including Ewan McGregor, who is memorable as a young protégé of the late pontiff, and who seems to challenge the common wisdom of the Conclave just by being 40 years younger than his fellows when he lectures for church reform. Stellan Skarsgard is excellent as a gruff commander of the Swiss Guard, who may or may not have thrown in with the Illuminati. But the real star of the film is Rome, and its High Church gorgeousness, with lush cinematography by Salvatore Totino, who renders the real sky above the Vatican, in a cataclysmic event, with the detail and majesty of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. --A.T. "We will destroy your four pillars. We will brand your preferiti and sacrifice them on the altars of science then bring your Church down upon you. Vatican City will be consumed by light. A shining star at the end of the Path of Illumination."

The above comes from this thrilling movie that was directed (and co-produced) by Ron Howard. This movie is based on Dan Brown's novel of the same name. (Brown was also co-executive producer of this movie.)

This film is a sequel to the movie "The Da Vinci Code" (2006). (Note that Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci Code" (2003) was actually written after Brown's novel "Angels & Demons" (2000)).

The quotation that opens this review is actually a message sent to the Vatican from a secret and ancient scientific organization called the "Illuminati." This organization wants to kill the four favourite cardinals (or senior priests) considered to be Pope (the "preferiti"). As well, the Illuminati want to destroy Vatican City in a blaze of light using a bomb--not just an ordinary bomb but an "antimatter" bomb. Note that:

(ordinary matter) + (antimatter) = (annihilation)

At his point, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks reprising his role) is summoned by the Vatican. His along with a woman scientist's (Ayelet Zurer) mission is to save the four preferiti and locate the antimatter bomb.

I liked this movie because I found it to be an interesting blend of the ancient with cutting-edge science. This movie is also beautifully filmed with equally beautiful background music.

One word of caution: you have to pay careful attention when watching this movie. If you don't, you will likely get lost, and the rest of the movie will not make sense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper at Amazon.com Dec 10 2009
By Mike
Format:Blu-ray
The price delta between Amazon Canada and Amazon USA is extreme - particularly for Blu-Ray. I just purchased this movie as well as the latest Star Trek and Harry Potter Blu-Rays for substantial savings. Given our dollar is almost at par and given that the shipping/Customs issues are well-handled (the DVDs arrived quite quickly) it is well worth the extra shipping costs. I have saved a bundle. I would hope that the price differential comes down, as I would prefer to buy Canadian. But I'm not going to pass up significant savings.

5.0 out of 5 stars My experience with Amazon.ca Dec 28 2009
Format:DVD
My name is Rita Rohrer and I have purchased many, many books from Amazon over many years. Among other books, I have all of Dan Browns's books and received his latest book "The Lost Symbol" the day it actually came out. I was notified by Amazon in early Summer and got a great discount ordering it early. I received it in September 2009 and am totally satisfied.
I don't purchase any books anywhere else, am totally satisfied with prompt delivery from Amazon and have always found all books of my interests from Amazon with good prices and excellent service.

I highly reccomend Amazon to anyone that likes books, DVDs, etc.
Amazon offers anything you are interested in from books, to DVDs and many other items you cannot find anywhere else.

Thank you, Amazon for your excellent service. I am proud to be a member!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Ballet of Opposing Forces Dec 19 2009
By Richard S. Warner TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Ron Howard's second Dan Brown film, "Angels and Demons" more than supercedes it's predecessor "The Da Vinci Code". It is, for all reasons, a superior film. I liked "The Da Vinci Code" a fair bit, but this one is done to perfection. It's faster, tighter, more suspenseful and more credible in its story line.

Famous symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to Rome to decode threats to the Vatican being made, apparently, by an ancient secret society that was once condemned, hunted down and killed by the Roman Catholic Church for it's idealogical differences, and is now seeking its long-awaited revenge. A higly volatile and extremely explosive container filled with the world's first suspended anti-matter is the their weapon of mass destruction that also bears a perfect symbolic metaphor used in the sects arcane writings. Call in Robert Langdon ...

In retrospect, all the familiar Dan Brown formulae are there, for Brown clearly writes from a very standard template. After reading a few of his books his pre-set structure makes itself pretty apparent, making them less engrossing reads as you can begin to predict what benevolent character is going to turn into the bad guy, and what enormous, world-shattering mystery is NOT going to be explained finally, but in a taunting and manipulative way, is going to be whipped out of your grasp and left to dissipate in a classic "Brownian" refusal to pay up. That the movie version of "Angels and Demons" is so UTTERLY engrossing and involving to the point where you suspend all critical analysis while watching is as much a testament to Howard's skill as a top-notch director as it is to Browns writing, brilliantly suspenseful as it is.
