In Ron Howard's thrilling follow-up to The Da Vinci Code, expert symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) follows ancient clues on a heart-racing hunt through Rome to find the four Cardinals kidnapped by the deadly secret society, the Illuminati. With the Cardinals' lives on the line, and the Camerlengo (Ewan McGregor) desperate for help, Langdon embarks on a nonstop, action-packed race through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, and the most secretive vault on Earth!
The extended edition of Angels & Demons provides enough extras to fill the Sistine Chapel--all of them fascinating. "The Full Story" is the complete behind-the-scenes story of making the film, with great interviews with director Ron Howard, star Tom Hanks (who acts as host), and writer Dan Brown, who worked closely with Howard on the set. The sections on filming on location in Rome and Vatican City alone are highlight enough--imagine navigating a huge film crew through the nooks and crannies of Rome's cobblestone streets. And the re-creation of the Vatican's interiors--done, amazingly, on sound stages in Glendale, California--is a masterpiece of detailed work by set designers, prop managers, and costume designers. There's a whole section just on Ewan McGregor's priestly vestments and their fabrics. Other great extras include "Characters in Search of the True Story," in which Brown and the film's screenwriters talk about bringing such a well-known novel to life onscreen. And the short documentary "This Is an Ambigram" is a captivating look at written symbols that read the same upside down--as does the word Illuminati in Angels & Demons. The artist who studies ambigrams is named John Langdon--the same last name as Hanks's character in the film. Coincidence? Fans of Dan Brown and Angels & Demons know there is no such thing. --A.T. "We will destroy your four pillars. We will brand your preferiti and sacrifice them on the altars of science then bring your Church down upon you. Vatican City will be consumed by light. A shining star at the end of the Path of Illumination."
The above comes from this thrilling movie that was directed (and co-produced) by Ron Howard. This movie is based on Dan Brown's novel of the same name. (Brown was also co-executive producer of this movie.)
This film is a sequel to the movie "The Da Vinci Code" (2006). (Note that Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci Code" (2003) was actually written after Brown's novel "Angels & Demons" (2000)).
The quotation that opens this review is actually a message sent to the Vatican from a secret and ancient scientific organization called the "Illuminati." This organization wants to kill the four favourite cardinals (or senior priests) considered to be Pope (the "preferiti"). As well, the Illuminati want to destroy Vatican City in a blaze of light using a bomb--not just an ordinary bomb but an "antimatter" bomb. Note that:
(ordinary matter) + (antimatter) = (annihilation)
At his point, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks reprising his role) is summoned by the Vatican. His along with a woman scientist's (Ayelet Zurer) mission is to save the four preferiti and locate the antimatter bomb.
I liked this movie because I found it to be an interesting blend of the ancient with cutting-edge science. This movie is also beautifully filmed with equally beautiful background music.
One word of caution: you have to pay careful attention when watching this movie. If you don't, you will likely get lost, and the rest of the movie will not make sense.Read more ›
Famous symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to Rome to decode threats to the Vatican being made, apparently, by an ancient secret society that was once condemned, hunted down and killed by the Roman Catholic Church for it's idealogical differences, and is now seeking its long-awaited revenge. A higly volatile and extremely explosive container filled with the world's first suspended anti-matter is the their weapon of mass destruction that also bears a perfect symbolic metaphor used in the sects arcane writings. Call in Robert Langdon ...
In retrospect, all the familiar Dan Brown formulae are there, for Brown clearly writes from a very standard template. After reading a few of his books his pre-set structure makes itself pretty apparent, making them less engrossing reads as you can begin to predict what benevolent character is going to turn into the bad guy, and what enormous, world-shattering mystery is NOT going to be explained finally, but in a taunting and manipulative way, is going to be whipped out of your grasp and left to dissipate in a classic "Brownian" refusal to pay up. That the movie version of "Angels and Demons" is so UTTERLY engrossing and involving to the point where you suspend all critical analysis while watching is as much a testament to Howard's skill as a top-notch director as it is to Browns writing, brilliantly suspenseful as it is.Read more ›
