Nice collection collection of short stories about the Guild Hunter series and characters. Loved learning about Sara and how she became the Guild Director and about Noel. Nalini Singh has a way with words that draws me into her stories and characters and always leaves me wanting to read more.

ANGEL'S FLIGHT by Nalini Singh

Angel's Flight is a series of 4 novellas by Nalini Singh.

Angel's Pawn features Guild Hunter Ashwini and Cajun vampire Janvier. Ashwini is a friend and colleague of Elena and like Elena possesses a special gift-she is able to feel and read emotions with a touch. But the Atlanta Archangel Nazarach, with years of pain and suffering on his hands, requires a job of Ashwini--To retrieve one of his errant new-born female vampires. But Ashwini is stunned when she learns of the nature and the extent of Nazarach's evil.

Janvier is a sexy vampire, who on more than one occasion has been targeted for retrieval by the Guild Hunters, and more specifically by Ashwini. When Ashwini asks for advice, Janvier is prepared to partner with Ashwini in more ways than one. The sexual attraction between the couple is explosive, but Ashwini has a job to do, that does not involve any playtime with the vampire.

When Ash and Janvier return Nazarach's wayward vampire, his cruelty will touch deep within the Hunter's soul, and the realization that both she and Janvier may very well have been, the Archangel's next victims.

Angel's Pawn is an introduction into the lives of Janvier and Ashwini. There is an attraction between the pair, one that cannot be denied, and let's hope Nalini is ready to write their story-in the near future.

Angel's Judgement is a prequel. We meet Sara Haziz, a hunter-born Guild Hunter before she became the Guild director. She has just been notified that she is in the line of succession for the position of Guild Director, and has been given what may be her final assignment.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 amazing stories June 1 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is well worth the read, with 4 short stories on characters from her previous stories that you always wanted to know a little bit more about. Each story is well written and has a solid beginning and end, but because I enjoyed these stories so much I was left wanting more (in a good way)!

Angels' Flight
Nalini Singh

Captivating! These stories will capture your heart, bring you close to tears and leave you craving more.

Nalini Singh's Angels' Flight is a collection of short stories belonging to her Guild Hunter series. Rich in description readers can almost `watch' as the amazing stories unfold and come to life. Creatively immersing readers in both times long passed and modern day, Singh guides her readers through gripping adventure, breath taking romance and heart breaking loss.
Singh cleverly brings her characters to life giving them a two dimentional feel. From the angels scared by times passage, to the vampires struggling between two very different worlds, to the humans who scramble to try and understand it. Though the stories in themselves are as fans will have come to expect from Singh they are arranged in the book without any sense of order, disrupting the flow as readers go from one story to the next.

The order as they appear in the book
Angels' Pawn
Angels' Judgment
Angel's Wolf
Angels' Dance

As they appear so far in the series time line
Angels' Dance
Angels' Judgment
Angels' Pawn
Angels' Wolf

Singh proves whether it be by short story or full length novel, she is highly adept at pulling readers in. those who dare to venture beyond the covers of her works will not be disappointed. As they find a world captivating in its detail and beauty. Overall I highly recommend this book to all fans of the Guild Hunter series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but a little annoyed March 1 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a little annoyed that this only has one new short story. What is the deal with all of these publishing companies releasing already written material and re-packaging it as "new" (I'm looking at you Nora Roberts)?

I'm a huge fan of the series and couldn't wait. So a few months ago I pre-ordered the book and when I saw that it had downloaded immediately went to read it.

Here's the deal - it's 3 previously published short stories (which I've already bought) with only 1 new one. When you read the book description now it clearly states that, but when I pre-ordered it the description DID NOT say 3 previously published novellas.

$7.99 for 1 novella is a bit much. Even if it had 2 new stories and 2 old ones, that might have been fine. I'd rather have bought Galen's story as a stand alone novella for $2 or $3.

That being said:
Galen and Jessamy's story was interesting to get the back story, but it didn't really pull at me like some of Singh's other stories have done. I liked Jessamy, but found her to have a bit of the "waiting lady in distress" thing which I'm not the biggest fan of. I think where Singh shines is in full length novels (I also read her Psy series) because she had a chance to fully develop her characters and story. In novellas she tries, but I can almost feel where she would have written more in but didn't do to space constraints (like when Jessamy goes back to the Refuge). Keeping all that in mind, I enjoyed Galen's story but can't wait till the next full installment of the actual series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great anthology for fans of the series Feb. 28 2012
By Jen - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This anthology features a collection of short stories in the Guild Hunter world. Three have been previously published. The last is new.

Angels' Pawn - Throughout the first three Guild Hunter novels, we get little teasers about the hunter Ashwini and her constant foil, the sexy Cajun vampire Janvier. But in this short story, we get to see the two of them in action. Though Ash is usually hunting Janvier, here they are working together to bring in a vampire at the center of a power struggle. The whole thing serves as a little slice of life for the Guild Hunter, but it also showcases the sexy dynamic between Ash and Janvier. This isn't a story with an HEA. It does, however, leave the door wide open for the possibilities between these two. I hope they get their own story one day. The backstory on Ash alone would make it worthwhile.

Angel's Judgment - This is our chance to see Sara and Deacon when they first meet and fall in love. When the story begins, Sara is trying to decide whether she will accept the position as the new Guild Director. (Chronologically, it happens before the events of Angels' Blood.) As she works a case, trying to find a killer who is targeting vamps, she is paired with Deacon. He is known within the Guild as The Slayer, investigating rouge hunters and delivering punishment when necessary. They work together to find the guilty party, and grow close in the process. Sara has always been just a background character for me in the series, but this story gives her more depth. And Deacon is hawt! A great novella, filled with action and awesome sexy-times. Definitely a keeper for fans of the series.

Angels' Wolf - Poor Noel. Back in Archangel's Kiss, he was the vampire savagely beaten and tortured to send a message to Raphael. His body has now healed, but he may never recover from the emotional damage. As this story begins, Raphael sends him on a mission to Louisiana, to help the angel Nimra figure out who is trying to kill her. Nimra is very powerful, striking fear in even the most brutal angels. But Noel finds there is a gentle spirit behind her fierce reputation. It was strange seeing such a soft angel, when almost all the others in the series have this vein of inhumanity. But I did enjoy watching her breathe new life into Noel's broken spirit. By the time the story ends, we finally get an idea of who he was before his attack. And it's clear that through love, he'll one day be whole again.

Angels' Dance - Set 400 years in the past, this story gives us the chance to watch Galen and Jessamy fall in love. Jess is a teacher at the refuge, loved and respected by all, but the ancient angel has never known a man's touch. She is thousands of years old, but her malformed wing has kept her grounded and isolated. Galen recognizes that there is more to her than just a teacher and historian. He sees the woman beneath. And he takes her to the skies... exposes her to the world. He awakens feelings in her that she never thought she would have. This is all happening as Galen works to prove himself worthy of entering Raphael's service. Also at the same time, there is turmoil in Cadre with a missing archangel and an attempt on Jessamy's life. But the real draw is the love story that develops between Jess and Galen. They are wonderful contrasting characters, proving how much opposites attract. A lot of time passes over the course of less than 150 pages, but it only adds to the depth of their feelings. Very satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars only one complaint Feb. 29 2012

I absolutely LOVE this series, my only complaint with this book that I pre-ordered months ago. It is 4 "short" stories (which you learned in the synopsis and other reviews) and I had already purchased 3 of the 4. So, I ended up paying 7.99 for 1 short story. While Galen/Jessamy's story is good and informative, I don't feel it was worth that price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy!! Feb. 28 2012
By A Book Obsession.. - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'll be honest that I am little funny when it comes to anthologies. I love the glimpses the short stories give into other perspectives in worlds that I have come to love. However I do not ever read them to find new authors. In fact I have several owned anthologies that I have skipped multiple stories in. Of course, I come back to them once I've read the authors main books. I only want to read these types of stories as a supplement rather than an introduction. That all being said, when I saw that Angels' Flight was going to be four stories all set in the Guild Hunter world, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Even though I was worried about my favorite couple was not being featured, I did not miss Elena and Raphael one little bit. It was truly wonderful getting to see so many different secondary characters shine. In fact while reading Angel's Flight I was overcome with the desire to re-read the entire series, and once my review schedule opens up a little I will be doing just that.

First up was Angels' Pawn which featured Ashwini and Janvier. I've always been intrigued by the dance these two have going on, and now that I have seen how it all got started I am even more desperate to have a full length novel that features them. There is just something about their cat and mouse game that really draws me in, and I'd love to see both of their hidden secrets become unraveled for one another.

Angels' Judgement show Sara right before she became the Guild Director. It also shows how she came to be involved with her very yummy husband, Deacon. It showed just how strong the pair of them are, both together and as individuals, as well as some tough choices along the way. Very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed Angel's Wolf. My heart bled for Noel in Archangel's Kiss, for what he lived through. I hated to see him so broken and have been very curious about why Raphael sent him to Nimra's court in Archangel's Consort. That question was more than answered in this story, and I really loved seeing him come back to life one small bit at a time.

The heart and soul of this anthology belongs to Angels' Dance. It showed a much different time than what has been showed in the Guild Hunter books. It is set back when Raphael was first coming into power and establishing his territory. I loved seeing how everyone came together in their roles, especially as they tested one another. Prior to this point, Galen came across as only being very cold and harsh, fitting of his position, yet in this story we got to see another side of him as he courts Jessamy. I loved getting the insight into her character as well, especially since I realized her inner strength far surpasses even the toughest archangel. To be the only of her kind permanently unable to fly, and yet still able to overcome that debilitating longing, is nothing short of amazing.

In closing I would have to highly recommend Angels' Flight as it was a fantastic grouping of stories in the stellar Guild Hunter world. Some of the content was previously published, but the gorgeous cover and the new material make this anthology more than worth the purchase. This is a definite must buy for fans of the series, and will make a great addition to your collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the meh.......... Aug. 31 2012
By bearboo2 - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I generally don't buy novellas as the short story format doesn't allow for much of a story/depth of character development. However, Singh is one of my favorite authors and none of these were stories I had read before. The reason why I am giving this book 2 stars is due to the fact that 1 story was a 3.5 stars and 1 story deserved less than a 1 star, when compared to quality of work Singh normally produces. The short story of Ash and Janvier was laughable - more like an introductory chapter and one where nothing happened! That is the negative star story. The story of Duncan and Sara was just meh. They really had nothing in common other than she found him to be a total sex pot that she lusted after. Noel and Nimrah's story was a little better developed, had a "who done it" intrigue factor and Noel was first introduced as part of Raphael's tower so I was interested in what happened to him. Galen is one of Raphael's Seven and after reading Dimitri's story I really wanted to know more about the angels that make up Raphael's core group. Jessamy and Galens' story was the best developed out of all 4 stories. They are both strong characters in completely opposite ways yet had chemistry together. Still, not enough to make this book worth paying the $6 Amazon price (buy 4 get one 4 deal). None of the characters in this book struck me as having the strength of chemistry that are present in the couples of the Psy-Changling series or that of Raphael and Elena. I would def. read this book if I could borrow it from the library. But it is nothing I need to own in order to read over and over again.]. I am really hoping that a story about Illium will soon be published.
