Product Description

From Amazon.com

Anger/Grief is the remix companion to Sakamoto's Discord, a modern classical endeavor with multi-media features for CD-ROM. These remixed interpretations are often more compelling than Sakamoto's original, which is stiff and overbearing in parts. In the hands of various producer/DJs, Anger/Grief displays deep emotionality and vibrant rhythmic life. Courtesy of artists like Rare Force, Talvin Singh, and Chocolate Weasel, Sakamoto's ambitious second movement, "Anger," is reconstructed into a trip-hop template. While Sakamoto's use of strings isn't completely obscured here, it is balanced by beat-driven, electronic production techniques. Chocolate Weasel's "Anger" remix contains both orchestral grandeur and rambunctious percussion discussions. In spite of Fernando Aponte's short, sobering edit, these "Anger" experiments and Amon Tobin's work on "Grief" provide engaging alternatives to Ryuichi Sakamoto's high-brow indulgence. --Mitch Myers

4.0 out of 5 stars Remixed and Redone, Sakamoto survives, Feb 10 2000
By Andy Niable "andyx" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Anger/Grief (Audio CD)
It is a testimony to Ryuichi Sakamoto's broad appeal that his classical music gets reworked by house music DJs. For those, like me, who can appreciate a brainy piece of classical music as well as a good pounding beat of hip hop-influenced dance music, this is the best of both worlds. It probably helps for one to know the source disk, a beautiful work of four very-different pieces of music. But these remixes are enough of a departure from the antecedent material, rich enough for repeated listenings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ryuichi Sakamoto - Anger / Grief, Feb 22 2011

This review is from: Anger/Grief (Audio CD)
Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of Japan's electronic music pioneers, has his modern classical tracks, Anger/Grief, worked over in a big way. How big? Well, Amon Tobin goes dark and spooky on "Grief", while Rare Force run "Anger" through some martial hip-hop. Talvin Singh inserts his trademark tabla `n' bass in "Anger" and Chocolate Weasel takes a different approach: it's a cacophonous din of horns and drums. The original "Anger" is also included -- it's interesting just to hear how different the remixes are.
