Stimulant, July 15 2008

This review is from: Animal Sketching (Paperback)
The author says "...the object of this book, which really is to create a stimulant to the younger artist, to draw things as he sees them, has fulfilled its purpose." I am neither young nor an artist but I find this little book very stimulating. If you browse the book you will see very simple animal sketches. Many of them are so simple that I thought I could do them better, so I tried. And this is the important thing, I tried, I copied the sketches in the book. Maybe one sketch has only a few lines and maybe you get some/all of them right, but what do you think of the overall result? Could it be better? Just do it again, after all it only takes a moment, there are only a few lines to draw.
I have only tried with the sketches in the book and I have yet to try with living animals (dogs, cats, cows,...) I wanted a book on animal sketching and, besides the title, this es the content of this book.
I highly recommend this book.

This little book has become one of my favorites on the topic of sketching and aminal drawing. It is a different kind of book. There isn't a lot of text and there are no step-by-step excercises, here. The bulk of it is simple sketches of a great variety of animals. It seemed, at first, that it might be boring. However, what it has turned out to be is a great reference and a valuable learning tool. The sketches are so simple that it is hard to resist trying and re-trying them. And as one goes along, ideas about using line, etc to quickly render an object come to light.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his/her drawing/sketching/painting skills. The lessons learned here can be applied to any subject and lots of mediums, so it's worth getting even if you aren't a huge fan of drawing animals. Trying out different media with these sketches adds to the fun.

This charming little book is instructional and includes lots of animal sketches to practice your drawings of disparate species. Enlightening and recommended.
