Book Description

Sep 1 2011 Tales of Prehistoric Life
This mind-blowing feast for the eye uses photo-realistic, computer-generated images to illustrate what dinosaurs might have looked like in their natural environment. Complementing the extraordinary images is an exciting, scientifically accurate story about a young ankylosaur (a plant-eating, heavy-plated dinosaur) living along the banks of a grassy lake. When he encounters an old ankylosaur, he gently endeavours to make contact, only to be rebuffed. Then a T. rex attacks, and the youngster knows the old dinosaur is in grave danger. Will the T. rex triumph? It looks that way, until the young ankylosaur comes to the rescue, tail club swinging. Ankylosaur Attack is book one in the Tales of Prehistoric Life series. Dramatic stories + eyepopping visuals = a surefire hit with young dinosaur lovers.

I bought this based on a review that stated it was a great story with amazing pictures and it's true. My nephew (5) is Dinosaur mad and I picked this up for him for Christmas, but I've enjoyed reading it. Bought another for my niece I thought it was so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story, brilliant illustrations Aug 23 2011

This is a beautiful book. I ordered it sight unseen, partly because I was familiar with the author's other works, but mostly because my 4-yo loves Ankylosaurs more than any other dinosaur (I don't know why). The book does not disappoint!

The story is a bit simplistic but nice (my kid devours anything dinosaur, so anything less than an encyclopedia feels light). It's not a cartoon -- the dinosaurs aren't given names, they don't talk, etc. -- but that's by design. It's a "true-ish" story; a scene that might have once happened. And it's as scientifically accurate as a work of this nature can be, which is very refreshing.

But what makes this book really shine -- and will immediately vault it into my son's Hall of Fame bookshelf -- are the illustrations. Stunning photo-realistic images, beautifully composed and placed in a wonderland of prehistoric flora, these pages will have to withstand the everyday scrutiny of an enthusiastic 4-yo. And 5-yo, and 6-yo... as the years go by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations, Sweet Story, Perfect for Science Fans Sep 7 2011

Ankylosaur Attack is a lovely book with a sweet storyline. My seven-year-old son read it to me as soon as it arrived in the mail, and my entire family enjoyed it. The illustrations are, I believe, a mix of photo backgrounds and digitally-illustrated dinosaurs, and are visually stunning and seem very real. The T-Rex slobber is quite lifelike!
The book strives to be scientifically accurate, and through the storyline you learn various facts about the dinosaurs, like Ankylosaurs are usually solitary, plant-eaters who have heavy armor and large clubs on their tails for protection from predators. Kids will get a sense of how these dinosaurs may have lived their lives, including some challenges they faced. But unlike many science books that can often be tedious lists of facts, this one is a narrative with a sweet, but at times thrilling, story. "He swung his tail as hard as he could. His club whistled through the air." Exciting!
I would recommend this book for families with kids from 2 or 3 to 8 or 9 years of age. It isn't very long, and so makes a good bed-time story.
I also own and recommend Loxton's children's science book "Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be".

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing images and a good dose of suspense Oct 4 2011

I bought this book for my four-year-old son who, like so many his age, just loves dinosaurs. Even though I anticipated some high quality images, I was blown away by what I saw when I opened the book. The dinosaurs were so realistic, my son actually asked me, "How did they take pictures of the dinosaurs if people weren't around back then?"

On top of the amazing imagery, the story is excellent as well. My son, who normally just goes along with what is being read, was wide-eyed as I turned the pages. I've never seen him that captivated by a story before.

I'd highly recommend this book for any child who loves to get lost in the world of the great dinosaurs.
