i've listed this album as one of favorites for 2011.it is not going to appeal to every one because breaks a lot of rules. It is not really rock, more alternative then anything. great guitars through out. the vocals are excellent, haunting and seductive. Every song is strong. this album is well worth the coin.

This album was a brave production in that it shunned formula and disregarded potential for broad commercial appeal. My first listen was a bit uncomfortable, but it affected me so much that I played the CD again immediately. That's all it took to recognize Anna Calvi is a powerful singer with professional people around her who succeeded in giving her a recording that makes her a force to be reckoned with. I took a risk ordering this album. I am very happy with my purchase. Much like many years ago when I first heard Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run I thought "what the heck is this?". Of course after a second or third listen I became a believer. I'm a believer in Anna Calvi.

When I first heard about Anna Calvi it came from a recommendation from one of my all-time faves Nick Cave. So obviously I was intrigued as Nick isn't exactly a public figure who recommends much. The album is a grower and now i'm certainly impressed and really in love with the songs. I was able to see Calvi live in Los Angeles recently and it blew me away. I went on a whim and since then the record has been on repeat. Her guitar playing is superb and takes her out of the 'singer-songwriter' category thankfully. Her voice is amazing and what I found even better is that her speaking voice is high-pitched and squeaky (still pretty) like a mouse. This is a great indie album of 2011 and I hope more people get introduced to Anna's music so in the USA we can see her more often. Great album, pick it up and tell your friends about it.

Easy to hear why Brian Eno decided to produce Anna Calvi's debut album after falling in love with the demos she recorded in an attic.A lot of the buzz about this album plays up Calvi's PJ Harvey ferocity and Elvis crooning mixed with how her virtuosa guitar work nods to Debussy, Ravel, and Messiaen as much as it does to Hendrix. Which is all there in abundance: Elvis on "Morning Light," Debussy on the opening to the epic "Blackout," John Dowland on the first bars of "The Devil," and Wind-Cries-Mary Hendrix on the opening dust-and-tumbleweeds "Rider to the Sea" - which really has to be played as an overture straight through to the end of "No More Words," ideally at full blast driving the PCH with the top down... or emerging from the Tube into the slush of a Brixton street. But it's how much it feels like her music is at home in *and* able to transform such completely different contexts that makes it so epic for me. It keeps surprising me with its richness. |
