Product Description

From Amazon.com

In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

1.0 out of 5 stars Anne The Action Hero, Jun 19 2005

I was greatly disappointed with this movie. They might as well have called it 'Anne The Action Hero'. Instead of staying true to Lucy Maud Montgomery's story, Anne and Gilbert go off to the war, the war their children were actually fighting. Instead of seeing Anne and Gilbert settle into family life with their children, the writers instead made up this crazy movie with so many plots and basically a lot of chaos. It was so sad to watch this movie knowing that they had officially ruined the Anne of Green Gables trilogy. Sadly too, the movie was made so many years after the second one that Anne looks very aged. It would have been much more appropriate to follow her family life and watch her children growing and all the great adventures they had.

I could not finish watching this movie. (I am very big fan of Anne and Avonlea.) I hated every second of it. It is not Anne at all. Kevin Sullivan would have been better off labeling it as original movie of his own invention and leaving Avonlea out of it because the fans would have felt less betrayed over how he destroyed Anne's story. There is not a single thing in this movie that follows the Lucy Maud Montgomery books, and in fact, it doesn't even stay consistent with his OWN canon... in the TV Series Road to Avonlea he established that Anne and Gilbert were married with children already. In this, we've somehow fast-forwarded a good 20+ years from the end of Anne the Sequel to WWI and yet Anne and Gilbert are still unmarried and have not aged. Seriously? And that's just one issue I have with the movie, but the story itself is just all made up out of Sullivan's head, nothing to do with the Anne series of books.

In the actual books, Anne and Gilbert's youngest daughter is the heroine during the first World War and their sons go off to fight.

Awful.

It's kind of like the fourth Indiana Jones movie... I pretend now this movie does not exist. The first Anne of Green Gables is brilliant and worth every penny. Anne the Sequel is at least good even if it does take some liberties with the story (it keeps the right feeling though). But this... this is just bad. Really bad. Really, REALLY bad.

Can't say enough how much I hate this movie. I've lost all faith in Kevin Sullivan's ability to do justice to Anne and have skipped the next Anne movie he tried to make. No thank you, one dreadful disappointment was enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING STRAIGHT TO YOUR HEART, Aug 17 2002
By
This review is from: Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (DVD)
I must say, my wife hassled me month after month to watch this 8 hour movie. But with all the other things I rather have been doing, I just put it off. All the Action, Adventure, blood and guts, horror, etc. But for her birthday, anything. Then I watched it, tape after tape. Surprisingly, after my wife fell asleep, the movie still kept my interest. Anne of Green Gables was a very I don't know how to put it... Words from the mouth can not describe it. But what can describe it is all the words from your heart. It touched me, for the rest of my life. Started from nothing, then receiving a little, and then giving EVERYTHING. Very touching!
