Product Description

It?s the early 1940s, and the war in Europe is winding down. Anne Shirley?now a successful, middle-aged writer?has returned to Prince Edward Island for an extended visit. On a whim, she?s agreed to write a play for her dear friend, Gene; a play that will be performed as part of the White Sand Hotel?s summer stock season.

But Anne is forced to admit that the play is nothing more than a distraction?a way to take her mind off troublesome recent events in her life. Her only son Dominic has yet to return from the war. The play, she reasons, will keep her busy?at least busy enough to not go out of her mind with worry.

But a long-hidden secret discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables provides a distraction of its own. As Anne struggles to complete the play she?s promised to Gene, she delves into long-buried memories, reliving the troubled years before she arrived as an orphan at the Cuthberts? farmhouse. Over the course of one remarkable summer, Anne Shirley discovers the truth about her parents, the origins of her quest for ?kindred spirits,? and the roots of her wonderful, magical imagination.

In celebration of the centennial of the publication of L.M. Montgomery?s original novel, and inspired by Montgomery?s own creation of Anne, three-time Emmy award-winner and filmmaker Kevin Sullivan gives Anne fans a rare treat: a moving and complex glimpse into the circumstances that created one of the most beloved fictional characters of our time.

1.0 out of 5 stars New Beginning a New Travesty, Dec 13 2009

(REAL NAME)
I fell in love with Anne of Green Gables when I saw the original Kevin Sullivan film in 1985. This novel, based on the 2008 prequel, is horrible. Not only is the book poorly written, the plot line doesn't match important points in Montgomery's original text. This is a blatant attempt of Sullivan's desire to further capitalize on someone else's legacy. The more he kicks this dead horse, the worse it gets. The third installment of the Anne movies disregarded the timeline of the original novels so much, but was at least watchable because of Jonathan Crombie and Megan Follows. This one is -- I can't find the words to express how horrible. Don't give this man another cent for his bastardization of a Canadian literary icon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Blerk!, Oct 7 2010
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I have read nothing in the book but the blurb about it and am already put off. I think it is an insult towards Lucy Montgomery. If Kevin Sullivan has actually read any of Lucy Montgomery's actual sequels then he'd know Anne has six children, still lives on PEI and is a housewife, not a famous writer. From my calculations, Anne was at least 40 in 1918 so by 1940 she would be at least 75. The blurb made it sound like she was 35! Why would she want to leave her precious PEI or come back to find something under Green Gables floorboards? I haven't even read the book but I can tell you, it won't be worth the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm at the depths of despair, Dec 23 2011

This review is from: Anne of Green Gables A New Beginning (Paperback)
This is horrible. Toilet paper is more valuable than this... and softer too. Instead buy the original books by L.M. Montgomery; They will make you smile again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables A New Beginning, May 31 2011
By Mary McKim - Published on Amazon.com
This is a dreadful book. The author worked on the TV Anne series and seems to feel he can retroactivly change not only her back story but the very character of Anne Shirley herself. In the original Anne og Green Gables in chapter 5 when Anne is telling Marilla her life story Anne says very clearly that hermother died when Anne was three months old and her father died four days after her mother from fever. At the beginning of A New Beginning the author has Anne remembering happy scenes where Anne is old enough to read and goes to a school where her mother is her teacher. So much for being orphaned at an early age. The author admits to writing the book by adapting it from a movie script. That is how and why Anne is made to conform with the author rather then have the author conform with the Anne Shirley we all know and love. It is a fatal flaw. Don t waste your time or money. You will only be disappointed or outraged ... probably both.
