A definitive collection of the very best short stories by contemporary American masters

Edited by Joyce Carol Oates, "the living master of the short story" (Buffalo News), and Christopher R. Beha, this volume provides an important overview of the contemporary short story and a selection of the very best that American short fiction has to offer.

About the Author

Joyce Carol Oates is a recipient of the National Medal of Humanities, the National Book Critics Circle Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Book Award, and the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. She has written some of the most enduring fiction of our time, including the national bestsellers We Were the Mulvaneys, Blonde, which was nominated for the National Book Award, and the New York Times bestseller The Falls, which won the 2005 Prix Femina. She is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1978. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, Oct 19 2008
By Trina L. Drotar "Book Lover" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ecco Anthology Of Contemporary American Short Fiction (Paperback)
I just picked this book up yesterday, and I found 48 stories by 48 different authors to keep me busy for quite some time. As a student of fiction writing, it is great to have a collection of contemporary stories, "of which nearly all were written and published in the twenty-first century." Although there are many stories that could not be collected here, Joyce Carol Oates and Christopher R. Beha selected a great range of short stories. The first lines, alone, of these stories are worth the price of the book. For example, Rick Bass begins "The Hermit's Story," with "An ice storm, following seven days of snow; the vast fields and drifts of snow turning to sheets of glazed ice that shine and shimmer blue in the moonlight, . . ." or Sherman Alexie who begins "The Toughest Indian in the World," with "Being a Spokane Indian, I only pick up Indian hitchhikers." These lines are wonderful, giving the reader just enough to stir up interest. These are character driven stories. These are not stories to be read once and tossed aside. They are stories to return to, to study, to savor. I've finished half of them, but I have no favorites, and there are none that I dislike. Although too big for a back pocket or a handbag, this is a collection that should go with you when you travel, relax, sit by the beach, or when you curl up in your favorite chair.

This book was selected by the instructor of my short fiction writing class as one of two text books. It is much more entertaining and instructive than text books I have used in other courses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dynamic colection of 21st century short stories, Feb 20 2011

This book is the text for a Senior Education class, Contemporary Short Fiction. So far, it's a great volume. I anticipate enjoying it far beyond the assigned class reading.
