ONE OF MANY RECORDINGS,

I own a dozen recordings of COLE PORTER's music,but strangely, although there are at least three other recordings available of the score of this famous musical, i didn't have a cast album of the show.This one is as good as any other.True,some songs like EASY TO LOVE,FRIENDSHIP and IT'S DE LOVELY were not in the original show,but COLE PORTER himself did not object including songs that came from other musicals,and the key songs are all there.What a joy to hear YOU'RE THE TOP with all the lyrics,because PORTER was such a master of list songs and like the RODGERS and HART's song BEWITCHED,it is always sung with only one set of lyrics when a singer does it on record.In 1934,COLE PORTER was on top of BROADWAY with this show that deserves it's reputation.If you except KISS ME KATE,PORTER always had problems with the librettos of his shows;even ANYTHING GOES was worked over often.However as a songwriter in the thirties,he was probably the best and ANYTHING GOES is a shining example.I did not regret buying this time capsule.It's impossible to hate ANYTHING GOES,unless you are a silly gigolo.

Excellent presentation of "de-lovely" Cole Porter score,

While this recording does not come close to recreating the excitement of seeing Anything Goes in person, like the majority of cast recordings, it certainly is a joy to listen to. Sutton Foster shines as always. I think the real discovery is Colin Donnell as Billy, his vocals are silky smooth. The musicians also did an amazing job, the trumpets and clarinets in Blow Gabriel Blow are to die for. Its great to have the included dance breaks, however the tap break in Anything Goes is disappointed. Although that is probably more because nothing can compare to seeing it.Its a great CD. Whether you think Sutton is completely miscast or not, you will enjoy the Cole Porter score. 10 of 14 people found the following review helpful

It's incredible to me to think this musical was written and conceived in the 1930's! The music feels fresh and has a modern touch the sound. The highlight of this recording is most definably the lovely and musically powerful Sutton Foster and the adorably sweet Laura Osnes and to have Joel Grey as counterpoint to the female bombshell leads creates Broadway magic. Also setting this particular cast album from the many revival album is the exhilarating dance arrangements and colorful orchestrations. Take note producers! This is how you revive a classic musical!
