5.0 out of 5 stars What a little confidence would do..., July 31 2010

This review is from: Anywhere I Lay My Head (Audio CD)
I heard a couple of these songs and decided to buy the CD. SJ's style is a bit of an acquired taste, but (unlike another reviewer) I do not think any of the songs on this CD stink. I also don't think SJ has a weak voice. Quite the opposite.

What bothered me about the vocals on this CD: the music was (at times) too loud and drown out the vocals, and SJ didn't let herself go. She held back for some reason, and didn't begin to display her vocal talent or range.
As evidenced by her first CD Break Up, the lady's got a great set of pipes. Her voice is at times sultry and at times "pure", bubbling with rare natural melody (think Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia), but, unfortunately, SJ seems to lack confidence. She has the voice to carry a song and a CD with minimal (and quiet) musical accompaniment, and her vocal range is very good as well.

We hope SJ has another CD in her (and soon), and we hope she belts out (at least some of) the songs. Regardless, this can't be called a 'vanity album'... she's shown she's more than a beautiful face, talented actress, and (in person) a sweet and classy lady.

Waits croaks and snarls
With raw attitude
(An acquired taste)

Scarlett sounds like

A good day job

Seriously now, it takes guts to attempt to cover the music of Tom Waits, especially when you're not previously known for your musical talent. I can't imagine why the elfin actress would have chosen Waits' songs for her debut album, and unfortunately she doesn't have the vocals to match.

Her low pitched (almost masculine) vocals are for the most part drowned out by the musical accompaniment, which on this album isn't too much of a bad thing.

On the good side, there are three tracks that aren't that bad after a second listen, and two of them are due to David Bowie's input. These are the first single "Falling Down" and track five, "Fannin Street". The third is the light hearted "I Don't Wanna Grow Up".

This is an album you may hate on the first and second listen, but the three tracks I've mentioned may eventually grow on you.

Eventually.

It's a 2 star album, but just because I like her, and applaud her bravery to take on this project, I'm bumping it up to 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars blown offshore, May 22 2008

Who would have thunk it that Scarlett Johansson was this talented ! Every song is a moving sensitive journey into her soul. If you remember the final scenes with Bill Murray in "Lost in translation" and the look on her face and wondered what she was thinking , this CD answers those questions. Her mastery of the Kazoo is also fascinating and languid as she lays down a rich tapestry of mood setting tranquilitry. Her yoedeling on "Is that stuck in there" is in contrast to her sultry cooing in "They only come out at night" Buy it now!
