Book Description

Nov. 27 2007 Appleseed (Book 1)
World War III is over, and nomad soldier Duenan Knute and her cyborg partner Briareos struggle to survive in the abandoned cities and demilitarized zones of the post-war wasteland, the "Badside." Matters appear on the upswing, however, when they are found and brought to Olympus, an urban utopia and centerpiece for the reconstruction of civilization. Duenan and Bri join the Olympus' police, a force that seems hardly necessary in such a paradise. But, like in most pretty pictures, perfection is an illusion, and Olympus' peaceful facade hides a dark secret, a violent struggle between human and cyborg that could once again plunge the world into war... and genocide.

About the Author

Sarah Palin is the former Governor of Alaska, and the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir, Going Rogue, published in November 2009. She grew up in Alaska, where she and her future husband, Todd Palin, graduated from Wasilla High School in 1982. Palin graduated from the School of Journalism at the University of Idaho. She served two terms on the Wasilla City Council, two terms as the city’s mayor and manager, and was elected by her peers as president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors. She then chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, and the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. Palin was elected Alaska’s youngest, and first female governor, serving from 2006 to 2009. While governor, she was tapped as Senator John McCain’s running mate in 2008, becoming the first female Republican vice presidential candidate in our nation’s history.

The Palins reside in Wasilla with their five children and one grandson. They enjoy an extended family throughout Alaska and the Lower 48.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Start to this Classic Manga Jan. 25 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lately I've found myself collecting a lot of Shirow Masamune stuff. I bought the third volume of the Appleseed manga (Scales of Prometheus) months earlier, and since then I've been tracking down anything Shirow Masamune has done. Currently I'm watching Dominion: Tank Police, and then I'll move on to New Dominion and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.
Appleseed Volume 1: The Promethean Challenge is a good read. The characters are likeable and the artwork is detailed and appealing, although a little confusing during the more action-oriented situations. I ordered this with Volume 2: Prometheus Unbound, and although they surprisingly weren't in any plastic wrapping in the box they came in, they still arrived in fantastic condition looking better than some new books I see on the shelves of my local bookstore.
Again, a good read. My only complaint is that sometimes the artwork can get a little confusing during the battle scenes. Had to re-read a couple times to tell who was who.

5.0 out of 5 stars Things to Come meets Manga Oct. 19 2008
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I wonder if Shirow saw the classic movie "Things to Come"... And I mean the 1937 version. This movie has similar themes.

After a nuclear war a scientific elite (of cyborgs/androids in this one) begin the process of recreating the world and society. Unlike most fictions this does not include the enslavement or genocide of humanity. They welcome mankind with open arms and find a place for him in their society at great social cost and inviting the risk of danger in their gates.

The two main characters are a pair of hardened mercenaries/soldiers who are amazed at the generosity offered to them by this new utopian society and eagerly become cops to help them keep their peace. They fight terrorists who are mostly humans born inside this new civilization but have turned disillusioned with it either from boredom through luxury or paranoia at not having a direct say in the benevolent government of the androids. In short, paradise is threatened from within and these two become the enforcers because they've lived through mankind mostly killing himself and can't understand why people who live in such luxury and security they thought they'd never see again can try to destroy it and hurt innocents in the process.

It's a longer work, and less well reviewed than his other stuff. I think it was his most thoughtful work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series Jan. 3 2013

This is such a great series of manga. I had lost these books and was so happy when I did a search on Amazon for them. Shirow Masamune is one of my favorite manga artist/authors. His ability to make scifi seem real is astounding. Reminds me Arthur C Clarke's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic series Feb. 15 2012

in my opinion, the books get better and better as they go. amazing art, very well-thought-out futuristic setting, and especial attention paid to general engineering principles. of course, it's science fiction, so you have to suspend a little disbelief, but the attention to detail is splendid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tried to buy it on amazon Feb. 3 2014

My husband Loves these comics so I decided to buy him the lot for a Christmas present. I bought this one back on december 11th 2013 when it told me it was back ordered, but it stated ORDER NOW and receive by January 7th. While I understand the back order I do not understand the sudden price jump. I tried to purchase it for $14 and after 2 weeks it jumped up to $400 making it silly to purchase. I ended up buying it from anime castle for a mere $20. The series itself is wonderful! If you ever get the chance pick it up and get lost in its exciting world!
