Product Description

Earth's last city, Olympus, rose from the ashes of a global war on the backs of Bioroids, artificial clones who make up half the city's population. Under the strict guidance of a supercomputer, humanity's last survivors enjoy an idyllic peace, but only on the surface... Human terrorists within the military seek to return to power and clash with the government's E.S.W.A.T. forces led by the legendary soldier, Deunan Knute, and her boyfriend who is 75% machine. Retrieving the Appleseed will end the conflict, and Deunan alone holds its secret.

This is a re-release of the Geneon CGI movie that is now out-of-print. It was not common knowledge, but the Geneon release had an error and the 5.1 sound was not encoded properly. There was never a recall, so this new release should now rectify this situation and you can now purchase this release with a correct 5.1 mix. This is not a earth-shatteringly fantastic film, but it does show the significant difference between what the Japanese can do with CGI versus the rest of the world, and if you are interested in seeing the potential of new technology (even though this is now a few years old,) this is definitely something to pick up. The sequel Applesed: Ex Machina is also available from Warner Bros.

Appleseed is an all CGI movie from the legendary Shirow Masamune (creator of the magnificent Ghost in the Shell) and is almost as good. Originally released as a DVD back in 2004 by Geneon; it has now been license rescued and re-released by Sentai in high definition Blu Ray and with a new English dub using the same voice actors as on it's sequel movie - Appleseed Ex Machina [Blu-ray] (also highly recommended - see my review).

The plot is about a future world ravaged by war in which there is one gleaming beacon of hope. A magnificent city built out of the ruins called Olympus. A city in which humans, bioroids (human clones) and even cyborgs can live in peace. But of course there's always a serpent in Eden! And it may be up to a war weary human female plucked from the ruins; her former male partner now more machine than man and their bioroid hosts to make sure it survives!

The plot at times is a bit convoluted and does stretch credibility to the limits; but by God it's never boring. Right from the get go it starts out with one of the best battle scenes I've ever seen and just keeps on going. Everything in the movie is just visually stunning! From that very first fire fight in the ruins to the arrival at Olympus and right through to the end of the movie; it is just breath taking to watch with incredibly complex visuals and CGI characters that are almost real. In fact the movie actually looks even better than the cover art itself would indicate. It's that good.

On the Blu Ray the video is in a 1080P 16x9 ratio. The audio is not in high definition but does include both DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in both English and Japanese.

For those who enjoy good anime with a great storyline, this is it. Action all the way with great twists along the way. A must have addition to any ones collection and don't forget to get the sequel as well.
