boring,

This review is from: Appleville Elementary # 1: First Day (Mass Market Paperback)
My 6 year-old boy liked this book, but my 8 year-old dughter thought it boring ... and so did I. My boy said it taught him that if we don't like something but we still give it a try, it could end up being fun or good, which was the message of the book. He also said that first grade at Appleville Elementary was more like daycare than real school because the kids just ran in the school instead of lining up. We all agreed the setting lacked the authority of a learning institution, which my kids are very familiar with now that they are in school. My daughter thought the teacher sounded like one of the kids.Although this book is of the same reading level as the Junie B. Jones series and with the same school setting, it doesn't compare in terms of dialogue, plot, setting, and character development. Too many characters were introduced in the first chapter so that we had to keep looking back to remember who was who. I was prepared to like this series but I think we'll pass.

Appleville Elementary: First Day,
By Tami Brady "Whole Health" (Calgary, Canada) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Appleville Elementary # 1: First Day (Mass Market Paperback)
Everyone was excited about the first day of school and the very first day of grade one. Everyone, that is, except Carlos. Carlos liked kindergarten and wished that he didn't have to go to grade one.Throughout the first day Carlos was quiet. Everyone else was happy to talk during sharing time but Carlos still wasn't sure he liked grade one. The next day Carlos was in for a surprise. His teacher said that there would be a new addition to the class. Someone that would make them all happy. Appleville Elementary: First Day is a great story, just in time for back to school. No doubt there will be many kids like Carlos who are feeling a bit nervous.

Good transition from picture books,
By D. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Appleville Elementary # 1: First Day (Mass Market Paperback)
I was trying to figure out how to start transitioning my 6-yr old son away from picture books and motivating him to read chapter books on his own. I was browsing a local bookstore for something appropriate for his reading ability, age, and attention level, and found the "Appleville Elementary" series."Appleville Elementary - First Day" is the first of 4 book series (not sure if there are more coming). It has nine chapters, each chapter is short and sweet (4-7 pages each chapter, including illustrations), with basic black and white illustrations every other page or so, which do a good job breaking up the text. The plot is "intriguing", yet simple enough for him to follow and enjoy--I was even a little intrigued, but of course, its about first graders making the adjustment from kindergarten, so that's right up his little alley. I read aloud a chapter a night, and after each reading, I asked him to explain what was going on (to make sure he was interested in the plot). By Chapter 8, he started reading aloud to me, then he insisted he read Chapter nine. THEN, he read the little 3-page "sneak peak" for the next series book "Appleville Elementary-Fire Alarm", which I am ordering right away (MUCH cheaper on Amazon). |
