Product Description

From Amazon.com

A fanciful sequel to the successful 1998 miniseries Merlin, this 2005 multi-part series benefits greatly from Sam Neill's return performance as the legendary wizard. Taking place some 50 years after the first film, Merlin's Apprentice partners the magician with a young thief with untapped magic powers of his own (engaging Canadian actor John Reardon) in a quest to recover the lost Holy Grail, which holds the key to Camelot's protection and survival. Miranda Richardson, who enlivened the '98 production as the ferocious Queen Mab, also returns to provide some necessary drama as the Lady in the Lake. Solid production values (bolstered by the lovely Vancouver locations), confident direction by Hong Kong veteran David Wu (Bride with White Hair 2), and an abundance of fantasy-action make this a worthwhile adventure for fans of the first miniseries and sword-and-sorcery features in general. --Paul Gaita

3.0 out of 5 stars Long but ok, Aug 5 2009

I never saw the other dvd, Merlin, the other reviewers write about, but I did like this dvd. Some of it was cheesy effects but the basic idea is about choices and how they effect us and others. This movie is also about loss, love, honour, vengence, hopelessness, discovering that you can change yourself, and fighting for and deciding what you believe in. I like that the characters were flawed. It made it more realistic. I didn't have any noticeable problems with the dvd, sound, or picture at all. It does have a lot of fighting/battles/dead bodies/blood, so not for the young kids.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay miniseries, horrible dvd., Oct 14 2008

This made-for-tv miniseries was just okay but the dvd itself is a real sinker.

First of all, they wasted a huge amount of space to squeeze in a DTS track on a 3hr film, leaving less space for the video itself. The film is encoded as regular video at 60i instead of 24p, again taking more space and creating a bad looking dvd.

If that wasn't enough, the disc defaults to the Stereo sound track, the DTS track is out of sync and the DD5.1 track seems to be some kind of weird stereo-transfered-to-5.1 piece of garbage where the main dialogue ends up in the surrounds...

Overall, a very amateur DVD production. Will do for a rental but not much more.

The original merlin mini-series was amazing! I love it to this day.. but this mini series goes in a totally different direction than the original. It is all about the holy grail and says nothing about the main plot of the first merlin installment. Plus the plot just sucks.. i had to force myself to finish this, its just painful to watch.
