5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album Dec 16 2010
By phil
Format:Audio CD
After 4 years we finally get a great album from one of the best talent from south america. This album is a must for all Angra fans. There's great compositions, really melodic as usual. You will find more slower tempo songs but don't worry the fast melodic power metal songs are there too and shows the musicienship of the band as usual. The slower songs have a more progressive feel but are full of great moments and surprise. This album is not as good as Temple of shadow but it's one of the best to date.i recommend strongly this to all fans of melodic and progressive music in the world, this band is really above average.Recommend too: holyland and temple of shadow...

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a few spins to really sink in Oct 8 2010
By Justin G. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
One thing you can count on with Brazilian progressive power metal band Angra is that they're always evolving. No two Angra albums are identical. Still, I thought I knew what to expect from Aqua, the band's seventh full-length studio album and the first since original drummer Ricardo Confessori rejoined the fold. I don't think anyone expected an album like Aqua!

The first time I played it I hated it, largely because it didn't sound anything like Rebirth or Temple of Shadows (hell, I'd have taken another Aurora Consurgens). The second time I started noticing that there's a lot more going on here than meets the eye (or ears, I guess). Now that I've had a couple of weeks to really take it in (I bought the Brazilian import) I am in awe of what the band has accomplished.

So what does it sound like? Well, it's a conceptual album based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, and tempestuous is a good word to describe Aqua. It's a very progressive album, and one that really highlights the band's growth as songwriters. It's also unquestionably a metal album, though the heavy hitting Rebirth-style songs like "Arising Thunder" and "The Rage of Waters" are balanced by more organic sounding Holy Land-style progressive rock songs. Confessori's inventive drumming and native percussion sounds play a large role here, as do symphonic orchestration and choirs. The background choirs on "Spirit of the Air" in particular give you a glimpse of what Holy Land might have sounded like with Edu Falaschi on vocals. I feel like I could go on and on about all of Aqua's little twists and turns, but I'll let you discover them yourself.

If there's such a thing as a typical Angra album, Aqua isn't it. It is, however, one of the band's most ambitious and artistic efforts, and one that serious Angra fans should really come to appreciate. It may not happen on the first spin, but Aqua has an aura that resonates the more you hear it. Keep an open mind, and enjoy the journey!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty interesting album Nov 14 2010

I own most of Angra's album and as one of the other reviewers said, this album takes a few more spins to really be absorbed and understood, I think. Unlike past efforts which were pretty consistent thematically, this one varies a bit from the formula in places and occasionally pays off nicely. I wouldn't consider this a truly "progressive" metal effort though it has a few nods towards that genre throughout the album. This album is a nice mix of classically and Brazilian influenced music that takes some time to try a few new wrinkles here and there.

Overall I'm not sorry for the purchase though I doubt this will get a really consistent spot in the rotation for me. I'd rate it as a slightly less appealing effort than Rebirth and Temple and perhaps about the same quality as Aurora Consurgens which I found to be a reasonable if a bit predictable effort. Anyone who already owns a fair amount of Angra's back catalog shouldn't hesitate to purchase, just keep expectations realistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angra Does Not Disappoint Mar 29 2011

Angra again releases an album with all the elements I love about them. Metal, progressive, latin/bazilian style, harmonies, melodies, and so much more. Usually it will take me a few listens to really get into an album but this one caught me pretty quickly and I love that. Anyways, I'm going to keep it short and just say, buy this album.. Support the artist's out there and buy their albums so we can get more from them in the future!
