Someday You Like it Too!,
By Reijo Piippula "Gravenimage" (Turku, Finland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aqua (Audio CD)
This was the first Asia album I heard. It was when I borrowed some albums from library. I recorded songs from it to my friend Juha (Aqua pt.1, Who Will Stop the Rain?, Lay Down Your Arms, Someday and Crime of the Heart). I'm not sure was there more...At first I thought it was a nice album but nothing more...when I heard more Asia I decided to buy four albums (asia, alpha, aria, and aqua). My friend Juha has now more Asia than is legal... The album starts with a nice intro (sounds of sea or something), then comes a massive great track "Who Will..." and also a great rude track "Back in Town"...then it continues to have more good tracks...ballads (Love Under Fire, Someday) and two no so good tracks..."Lay Down Your Arms" is always that kinda track that makes me happy...so much power...the ballad "Crime of the Heart" and "Far Cry", as also "Don't Call Me"...a track I liked to sing to Taru (a girl who didn't want to out with me)...Heaven on Earth is a great track...it must be made in heaven...so great vocals...then there's also an outro and a bonus track "Obsession" which is the third best track after "Someday" and "Who Will Stop the Rain?".

Jeff Payne's first cd as vocalist and bassist, may also be the new lineup's best. It's close between this cd and their next one, ARIA. The group, even though they changed singers, still keep much of their signature sound, and Payne, who is not a carbon copy of old singer Wetton, still has the Asia delivery to his songs, of course it helps that rest of Asia is still intact. After this cd only Downes will be an orginal member. WHO CAN STOP THE RAIN, VOICE OF REASON, & DON'T CALL ME, are the closest to the orginal Asia, and are the best songs on the cd. LITTLE RICH BOY, is my least liked song on this cd. Group doesn't stray far from the old grounds, even with a new singer. Not a bad release from the reformed Asia.

A Brand New Asia,
By Frankly "starshiptrooper1971" (Bloomington, Minnesota United States) - See all my reviews

I was very excited to pick up this CD when it first hit the shelves in '91-'92. I'm a huge fan of Asia, but I wasn't aware of a new disc being released. I was sure that there were new band members, but no listing of musicians on the back of the disc..., hmmm. There's only Geoff Downes name listed as a producer. That was enough for me at the time. I opened the CD to find the list of musicians, and find Carl Palmer pictured (poorly) as drums/percussion, and Steve Howe on guitars, as well as Downes on keyboards. I believe that is where my disappointment started with this disc. No John Wetton. I listened to the tracks, and wondered where is Carl Palmer? A closer look revealed two other session drummers were playing, and I could only tell Carl was playing on one, maybe two tracks. Disappointing. Steve Howe makes an appearance on two tracks, oddly enough, the title "Aqua" (instrumentals, I&II). Good tracks, nonetheless, but only two. More disappointment. Geoff Downes plays on all tracks here, but who really cares? This is not an Asia lineup I care to listen to. Mr. Downes, you can replace all musicians, in my opinion, except the lead singer, and still call yourself Asia. You must own the rights to the name. There's no way this disc would have sold without the Asia name, and you fooled me into buying this poor effort. Yes, I am the fool here, but never again. Call your band "Lesser Asia", so people know what they're getting. One bright spot is the track "Who Will Stop The Rain". Marginal at best, top 40 sound. I don't fault all the musicians who played on this disc, but the way it was marketed and presented. Even the cover art leads a person to believe it's a Roger Dean Painting, who up until this disc had done their cover art (It's not, but is a Rodney Mathews illustration with the Roger Dean "Asia" logo). Ultimate disappointment. Let the buyer beware.
