A Professional Retrospective, Sep 4 2010

This review is from: Archie: The Classic Newspaper Comics Volume 1 HC (Hardcover)
I grew up on with Archie comics in the 1970s and '80s. Then and now, I prefer humor comics to the more standard, more popular adventure form. I have a lot of respect for comic writers--it's hard to be funny. As I got older, though, Archie got younger and preachier. I gave up the standard comics for digests which primarily consisted of reprints. I found that the reprints of older stories were far funnier than the modern stuff. Sure, some of the pop culture references were dated, but that was part of the fun. In a sense, you could say that it built my cultural literacy. So I became disappointed with Archie Comics' decision to censor and/or alter classic stories in the digests. The "big" was dropped in Big Moose and Big Ethel. Gags were changed. Sometimes entire panels were deleted. I realized the stress in reading these desecrations outweighed the enjoyment the comics brought me.
I am glad, then, that IDW is doing such a loving, respectful, professional job with this book. The strips are beautifully presented. More importantly, they stand up beyond their historical importance. Yeah, some of the '40's slang is hard to fathom, but context helps.
I hope that this book will help reinvigorate Archie comics, and help spread the word that comics can (and should) be...comic.

Beautiful, must-have book; Amazon really dropped the ball, Aug 31 2010

I had this book pre-ordered on Amazon for over three months. When the book was finally released, my order was pushed back another 2-4 months, and at the time of this writing, you can't even purchase a copy through Amazon at all. Luckily, I found a copy at my local comic book store and gladly bought it there. Anyway, for the review part...if you *can* find a copy of IDW's beautiful volume of the first three years of the Archie comic strip, definitely pick it up. The reproduction work is crystal clear and fantastic. If you're used to gag-a-day Archie strips, these older ones are a real treat. There are many continued story lines, some going for 3+ weeks. Bob Montana's artwork is superb. I'm not one for in-depth analysis, but if you're an Archie or comic strip fan, there's no reason not to get this book. You won't be disappointed.

THIS ARCHIE BOOK IS AWESOME!.. BUY IT! BUY IT!, Sep 27 2010

First, mad love and big respect to IDW publishing! They did a fantastic job
of putting the Archie newspaper comics in book format. The pages are clean
and very clear.
Secondly, Bob Montana's artwork and his comedic style of drawing/story-telling
is damn near epic as it is legendary! This insanely talented man being this
forgotten and not being worshipped at the annual Comic Con, like he should
be, is a stinking travesty! Bob Montana did some amazing work on this
run of Archie strips! Montana is my favorite Archie comic book artist. I
used to buy the old Archie digests just to see some of his reprints in
color. For me, the old Archie comics were funny and well drawn. The new
Archie stuff is not!..And I 've got to thank IDW publishing one more time!
I love you!..I'm already waitng for the second book of this series! I can't wait
to see more!
Lastly, I got to gripe about the obscene wait to get this book into
my greedy little hands. Man, IDW kept pushing the release of this book
back and back and back. It felt like it would never come out.I finally snagged
my copy at a local comic book store. Plus, I agree with the person who posted
before me: Amazon really slept on this book and could've done a better
job of getting this out there in the fans' hands much sooner.
Hopefully, the second Archie book of this series won't be long in coming..
Peace!
I'm also a little sad that IDW didn't print the Archie sunday comics
in this huge Archie collection.
I would love to see Bob Montana's work in color.
