Product Description

High school and college students who have a budding interest in architectural design will value this book for its solid foundational orientation and instruction. Author Mo Zell introduces readers to architecture's visual language, showing them how to think spatially and getting them started in architectural drawing with a series of instructive tutorials. Presenting three-dimensional design problems, she coaches students through the fundamentals of proportion and scale, space and volume, path and place, and materials and textures. A series of 40 work units covers virtually every aspect of architectural drawing, including:

  • Learning to see and sketch with accuracy
  • Developing fundamental drawing and modeling skills
  • Mastering subjective representation and rules of perspective
  • Employing spatial strategies: rendering and diagramming ideas

She concludes with practical advice for young people who are considering careers in architectural design, offering ideas on building a portfolio, getting advanced training, and continuing on a path to a professional career. More than 800 instructive illustrations.
  • From the Inside Flap

    (back cover)
Emphasizing architecture's creative aspects, this book gives you a foundation course in architectural design. It introduces you to the visual language of architecture, encourages you to think spatially, and inspires you to question the built environment.

Step-by-step tutorials explain the entire design process. In addition, there are hands-on exercises that inspire you to practice your new skills, from conceptualizing a space and visualizing it three-dimensionally to creating sections, elevations, and fully-realized perspective drawings.

You'll find information about building techniques and materials that impact on design. You'll also learn from case studies that show different designers' interpretations of a wide range of assignments. Finally, you'll get professional advice that will help you take your next steps toward a career in architectural design.

Mo Zell has taught drawing at several colleges and universities across the United States. She studied architecture at the University of Virginia and Yale before spending several years working in the profession. She is currently the coordinator of the foundation studio, manual representation at Northeastern University in Boston. Mo is also a founding partner in the design firm Bauen Studio, where she co-designed the winning entry in the competition to create a Veterans Memorial on Northeastern University's campus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book..., Jun 14 2011
This review is from: Architectural Drawing Course: Tools and Techniques for 2D and 3D Representation (Paperback)
This book is great for anybody starting out from dead scratch. The activities in it provide insight into a lot of design and different presentations of architectural drawings. It also has a chapter on how to make your own portfolio. It's a good starter book. However, if you're looking for an all inclusive book on how to draw perspectives or how to generate ideas, this might nor be the book for it. Like it says in the title, " Architectural Drawing Course". It covers everything and I mean EVERYTHING. If you're looking for something specific, this won't do it. The book is well organized, but the book is so packed with content, most subjects only span about 2 to 3 pages worth with pictures and diagrams. This book is mainly to inform the reader of what they are getting into if they choose this career path. I was an enthusiast before and this book helped me get a good start on architecture. For a starter like me, this book was perfect. You're basically starting a portfolio as you go along and not even know it. I'd recommend this book to others, but not to people who have been doing architecture for years.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners -- Too Basic for Professionals, July 28 2011
    By
This review is from: Architectural Drawing Course: Tools and Techniques for 2D and 3D Representation (Paperback)
A nicely laid out book for students and/or those lacking basic presentation AND design skills. The book is arranged like a first year design studio with lots of inspirational examples by starchitects like Siza, Hejduk, TWBS, etc, and exercises to explore and build DESIGN skills through drawing and modelling. There is a real emphasis on how drawing and modelling are DESIGN tools, and not merely final presentation techniques.

However, I returned it because it didn't offer enough info on advanced techniques for enhancing elevation CONSTRUCTION drawings. In fact, the entire book doesn't really touch on construction drawing, just conceptual and design presentation drawing and modelling techniques. It could be called, "Drawing and Modelling Techniques for Design".

I'm getting more out of Doyle's "Color Drawing". Though it focuses more on color perspective rendering techniques than orthographic presentation, some tips can be adapted for the latter.

This review is from: Architectural Drawing Course: Tools and Techniques for 2D and 3D Representation (Paperback)
"Architectural Drawing Course" is a very inforamtive book and easy to follow. Filled with great images, exercises and technical tips. I highly recommended to all freshmen and upper-class students who want to practice their drawing and modeling skills, or want to get better at hand-drafting and sketching.

5.0 out of 5 stars The missing text book for Architectural Studio, July 26 2009

This review is from: Architectural Drawing Course: Tools and Techniques for 2D and 3D Representation (Paperback)
Many architectural studio classes are taught without a specific textbook (not counting the reading of architectural classics). This could be that missing textbook. It is a broad yet specific syllabus of all things studio. While seeming a bit advanced for high school time limits, it certainly is worthy of college and graduate school courses.
