Writers Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft managed something quite clever with this, the film version of the 1970s sitcom Are You Being Served? The idea of this cheery collection of comedy stereotypes--the pompous one, the vulgar one, the camp one, the shifty one, and so on--being confined within a department store was a master stroke, as it allowed any kind of situation to arise without the plot having to exceed the restrictions imposed by the set. How, then, to keep the same theme for the big screen without just offering the television series writ large? Simple: send the whole cast on holiday together but make sure they can't leave their hotel, a state of affairs contrived easily enough by throwing a guerilla uprising into the plot. So it is, then, that the staff of Grace Bros. descends on the Costa Plonka while the store is closed for refurbishment. There are all the usual jokes involving knickers, boobs, toilets, and gay sex (sometimes all at once), adding up to a good slice of nostalgic fun for anyone who was there when lapels really were that wide. --Roger Thomas

The disc is lacking of any special features save for a theatrical trailer and chapter selection menu. I think though, for any true AYBS? fan, the sheer fact that this (in the past) hard to find film is on a fabulous looking DVD is more than enough.
On the upside: at least I finally got to see the Grace Bros. staff outside their usual environment, something I seldom saw in their small-screen misadventures. And it was also interesting to see how AYBS looks on a movie budget-- which apparently isn't too different from what it normally looks on a TV budget. From what I can gather, the only real diffs are the widescreen format, a better film stock, and the lack of a laugh track...
Bottom line: if you're a fairly close follower of the Are You Being Served? TV show but haven't seen this yet, this is worth at least a rental... if only to sate your curiosity. Otherwise, the AYBS movie ain't exactly what I'd consider a "keeper". And I am unanimous in this opinion, by the way...
The story begins at the Grace Brothers department store as we are intro'd to the cast there. The writers decided to throw in part of a routine already used from the TV show as a rich Sheik comes in wanting to buy some trousers.Mr.Humphries and Mr.Lucas are called upon to do the "dirty" work but it lacks the same punch as the show.As the plot moves forward it seems the staff are going on a free trip to the Spanish town of Costa Plonka, due to much needed renovations at the store.Read more ›

Got this out of enjoyment of AYBS, esp. Mollie Sugden & John Inman. This is a low-budget, often awkward, production that shines far less brilliantly than the TV series, but... Read morePublished 9 months ago by Aymeri
I wish this great group of actors could have gone on forever. Between Inman and Sugden they never gave me a dull moment.Published 10 months ago by Verna Miller
