Product Description

Product Description

A mash-up of magical girl, harem comedy, fan service, and murderous-moppet elements, Aria the Scarlet Ammo (2011) began as a series of light novels written by Chugaku Akamatsu and illustrated by Kobuichi. Kinji Toyama is in his second year at a Tokyo high school that trains students to become Butei, or armed detectives. He'd like to transfer to a normal school, as he's not much of a gumshoe unless he's sexually aroused--then "Hysteria Savant Syndrome" transforms him into an alternate persona who's as suave as he is deadly. When he encounters ace student and loudmouth Aria, Kinji gets drawn into a complex plot that involves a mysterious killer who's targeting Butei. Kinji asks, "Is it too much to ask for a normal, ordinary life?" and the answer is obviously yes. More girls from the student body pursue him and the inevitable clashes occur. Riko is supposedly a descendant of Poe's Arsne Lupin, which makes her a rival to Aria, whose great-grandfather was Sherlock Holmes. (Another student claims descent from Joan of Arc.) Aria is as demanding as Haruhi Suzumiya and as loud as Kaname in Full Metal Panic, but she lacks the charm of those outspoken heroines. Although Kinji is likable enough when he's not being shoved into someone's cleavage, he comes across as a wimp when he lets Aria bully him. The cast shoots off enough ammunition to fill a small warehouse, swings swords, throws knives, sets piano-wire snares, and unleashes various unexplained magical techniques. But a villain who attacks a busload of high school students with an Uzi and tries to crash a hijacked airliner must play better in Japan than it does in the United States. (Rated TV 14: violence, violence against woman, risqu humor, nudity, alcohol, tobacco and drug use, potentially offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon

Butei High School is a school that trains young people to be detectives. They receive an education as well as combat skills training. Kinji is a 2nd year student that has the ability to go into a "berserk" mode when he gets to excited. Even though he is a lower ranked Butei this ability makes him a hot commodity. One day he meets a girl named Aria. Aria is the highest rnked Butei and she partners up with Kinji to solve different cases. Her objective is to prove her mothers innocence and have the 7 life sentances against her lifted. They go through many trials together and become very close.

This anime has nothing original. We all know there is nothing new under the sun, but that doesn't mean something unoriginal can't be fun. This anime has some pretty good characters, an interesting story, and good animation. If you've seen Shakugan No Shana, then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this show. Despite being an unoriginal idea, this anime is very enjoyable. It's got action, comedy, and a decent enough amount of drama. Those are the things that make a series interesting. I can confidently recommend this series to any anime fan. I hope you enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond what I expected April 12 2013

Aria: The Scarlet Ammo is one of those "on a whim" purchases that I made after reading a little about it previously, and I am quite pleased with this anime. The characters are interesting and fun, yet dynamic enough not to be the same boring character profiles that you tend to run into when you watch a lot of anime. The story is interesting and seems relatively sound. The art is quite good, I am one who prefers a clean and detailed anime art style and Aria: The Scarlet Ammo definitely makes the grade. I wish it were longer though as there were some things that were discussed but left untouched since it is a shorter anime.

A quick summary:
All characters involved are the grand children of famous characters or real people; Sherlock Holmes, Joan d'Arc, and Arsene Lupin to name a few. They of course, being this is anime, have inherent skills that put them a cut above average humans and this type of thing becomes a factor in the story.

The protagonist of the story is a student at Butei High School, a school for students who intend to become police and as such. The students of Butei High are given the right to arrest people and work on various levels of criminal cases and leads. They are divided into various categories such as assault, recon, etc. Toyama Kinji, the male protagonist, has his own connection to characters of the past and also possess an interesting and somewhat awkward ability. When women are close enough to him to get his hormones running, he enters a state of mind called hysteria mode and his senses and reflexes heightened exponentially so that he may protect the girl nearest him. During this process, he also changes personality types and becomes a "gallant" gentleman as it were. There is a criminal faction involved in the story that is considered as just a legend by most of the school but some characters know a little more about them than most, enter Kanazaki Holmes Aria, a feisty little girl who is your typical Tsundere style character, but still brings a lot of substance to the story line. There are enough plot twists to keep things quite entertaining and there is a lot of comedic value to the story overall.

I've watched Aria over and over a few times and really enjoyed it. As someone who doesn't like to spoil things for others, I can simply say that if you are wondering if this is or isn't a decent anime to pick up and try, definitely do so; it will surprise you as to how good it actually is.
