5.0 out of 5 stars Solid first season June 27 2013
By DeanWinchester79 TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray
After being shipwrecked on an island in the South China sea for 5 years, Billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is discovered and brought back to his home of Starling City. Thus begins ARROW, a sort of spin - off from SMALLVILLE, but is way more interesting and chock full of great action. Stephen Amell plays the title role, and is great at it. Former SUPERNATURAL star Katie Cassidy plays Dinah Laurel Lance, a character loosely based on Black Canary and the former flame of Oliver's. Colin Donnell plays Tommy Merlyn, Queen's best friend and Laurel's new beau. Willa Holland plays Queen's younger sister, Thea, Susanna Thompson plays their mother and Paul Blackthorne plays detective Lance, Laurel's father.
The season mainly revolves around a list given to Oliver from his father right before his suicide. When Oliver returns home, he is immediately kidnapped and interrogated by a group of thugs to get information on the Queen's Gambit, Robert Queen's ill - fated yacht which is the reason for the island. Detective Lance has an awful grudge against Oliver because his younger daughter, Sara, died when the yacht went down. Laurel is not happy to see him at first, but gradually they become friends again.
After the kidnapping, Moira Queen hires the bodyguard services of John Diggle (David Ramsey - BLUE BLOODS) and is the first to learn Oliver's new identity as Green Arrow. During the course of the season, Oliver must battle The Dark Archer (John Barrowman) save Starling City from all sorts of criminals and hardcore drug addicts while crossing names off of his father's list and trying to prevent a terrible Undertaking. Needless to say, season 1 of Arrow is a MUST for any fan of Batman or comic books.

If Arrow didn't completely shed its rough qualities by the end of Season 1, it certainly improved to the point where most of the remaining complaints were minor at best. The series has already succeeded in reinvigorating the character and delivering a new saga that both pays homage to the source material and strikes new ground. Hopefully the higher-ups at WB are taking note as they pursue more TV adaptations of DC's heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best live action adaptation of any DC property April 8 2014

This series is far superior to Smallville in every way. The story line is incredibly well thought out and detailed. I particularly like the way they spend time each episode revisiting Oliver's time on the island in flashbacks. While the story does take some liberties with characters and events in the DC universe they are very well done (Huntress, Slade Wilson) and in subsequent seasons Brother Blood and Black Canary. The first season was not perfect but the season 1 finale got rid of some of the deadwood making the second season even better than the first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised me April 6 2014

I wasn't expecting to like the show that much going into it. Waiting for the butchering of characters, but I was very excited with what I watched. The show was greatly enjoyable with a fun cast and how they were written. I haven't finished the first season yet but I'm glad they are reaching out and dabbling into cameos of other DC characters. I don't care if the TV show versions don't mesh with the DC movies they have planned, I'm happy pretending their separate universes. Overall, great characters brought up for this show, and I can't wait to continue on to the Barry Allen episode and watch the Flash tv show take form.
