Favorite baroque lute CD, and one of my favorite CDs overall,
By
This review is from: Ars Melancholiae: Lute Music of Sl Weiss (Audio CD)
I first heard this CD playing in the courtyard of Wawel Castle in Krakow, courtesy of a tiny music shop there. The shop owner didn't want to part with his only copy becuase it was one of his favorites, so I agreed to simply copy down the info so I could purchase when I returned to the US. Hard to find, but SO worth it. Gorgeous lute music, fabulous baroque with no harpsichord (which I don't like). every track is wonderful. I listen to it frequently and never tire of it. Highly recommend this one, and this is the first time I've ever felt compelled to write a review about any CD. Good luck finding it! Try J&R Music. ML

Baroque lute music at its best.,

I own a lot of baroque lute cd's, but have found this to be perhaps the best. What first strikes you is the sheer sweetness and beauty of the sound of Moreno's lute, much better (or at least much more to my liking) than the usual variety. Then you are surprised at the beauty of the works. Weiss is usually good, but these pieces are very well selected, outstanding. Perhaps a problem if you already own many Weiss works, you can find many repeated. But believe me, it's worth it on the sound and the playing alone. That's the third point. Moreno plays not only effortlessly, but adapting so well to the pieces, that afterwards is difficult to hear them played in any other way. By all means one of my favourite recordings.
