This extraordinary publication presents, for the first time, the samurai armor collection of the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum in Dallas. The Barbier-Mueller has selectively amassed these pieces of armor over the past twenty-five years, ultimately forming one of the largest and most important collections of its kind in the world. It is composed of nearly three hundred objects, several of which are considered masterpieces, including suits of armor, helmets, masks, horse armor, and weaponry. The objects date from the 12th to the 19th century, with a particularly strong focus on Edo-period armor.
Offering an exciting look into the world of the samurai warrior, the book begins with an introduction by Morihiro Ogawa. Essays by prominent scholars in the field highlight topics such as the phenomenon of the warrior in Japan, the development of the samurai helmet, castle architecture, women in samurai culture, and Japanese horse armor. The book's final section consists of an extensive catalogue of objects, concentrating on 120 significant works in the collection. Lavishly illustrated in full color, each object is accompanied by an entry written by a scholar of Japanese armor.

The Perfect Book,
By
This review is from: Art of Armor: Samurai Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection (Hardcover)
I recently picked up this book in hopes of finding rare and beautiful reference images for designing Samurai Armor (being an illustrator) and learning about the process in which the armor was produced and under what conditions. I don't think I could have asked for more with this book. Not only did it have a concise and well written history of Japan and the origins the samurai armor, but it delved into details on the entire philosophy behind the culture that spawned these unique and fascinating artifacts. The book itself is huge, and the photos of the armor are artfully composed and shot with perfect lighting with close ups on the intricate detailing. Not the mention the pieces chosen are all astoundingly unique, samurai armor showing boundless creativity and true artistry. Some of the helmets are completely unreal looking and I would have never thought such interesting designs existed. This is by far one of my favorite period costume books to date in my collection and definitely the most beautiful samurai book I've come across. Completely worth the purchase and strongly recommend to any japanese history / samurai buff.

size matters. the same rule applies to this book as well. Not only because this hard cover/soft jacket, 306pg giant book is quite a sight on any book shelf itself, but also because the high resolution pictures on large dimension glossy high quality paper give you closer look at those art work on armor suite. Yes you do need big and clear picture to see the details. I have some american published samurai armor book, and quite a few Japanese ones. This one is still able to stand out. Many of suites in this book I have never seen before even from those Japanese books. Also this book is printed in Italian. Such build/content quality for a little more than 40 bucks is a steal. This is 5+ star material.

A tribute to samurai from The Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum,
By Antonio Covacci "antonello covacci" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Art of Armor: Samurai Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection (Hardcover)
Prepare yourself for a stunning visual experience. Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller have discovered, selected and purchased magnificent examples of the life and art of Samurai warrior: suits of armor and helmets, horse armor, accutrements used in parade as well during battles. For the collection, now in the exhibition at the Museé du quay Branly (see the web site) they have also built the museum in Dallas. For all of us they have written a superlative catalogue that has no rival in the field, and more in general, among books of art. The book as been designed by Jeff Pincapaw with photographs made by Brad Flowers. A selected group of scholars have fully covered the subject; with 120 examples of the most sophisticated piece of art from 1185 to 1868 (from Kabuka period to Edo period) covering the Mori Clan and the early armor. All the components are represented including Jinbaori (coats), Hakama (pants), blades and nothing more than three horses in full armor mounted by dressed warriors. Photographs are unique as well as the design of the book. Typed on Mercury and Whitney and printed on high grammature paper using an extremely large tonal range and color saturation, this is probably the first book of its kind, opening the way of a new generation of art books. Each picture is a triumph of details and has been processed to fulfill the layout design. The people at Yale University Press have released several books in the last few months on oriental arts that are shaking the field. If you want to keep your copy pristine, as a document of our times, please handle cotton gloves to pass over 356 pages of black, white, gold and immaculate pictures. The cover is slightly different from the one presented by Amazon and you may have a preview at the YUP site: another example of a publisher and a book that will continue to astonish us.
