The spotlight shines on Top Cow founder, Marc Silvestri in this very special art collection. Silvestri's career blossumed during runs on Uncanny X-men and Wolverine, and in the early 1990's revolutionized the industry when he co-founded Image Comics and created such hit properties as Cyberforce, Witchblade, and The Darkness. This over-sized art book showcases some of Silvestri's favorite, most popular, and iconic images from his illustrious career.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic March 9 2013

There is no doubt Marc Silvestri is a fantastic comic book artist, among other talents, but this book is lacking any personality for me.

I think what kind of disappoints me a little is that this book does a lot of, here is a piece of Marc's art in black and white, and here it is again in color. It's kind of the art of Marc Silvestri and the inks/colors of other people. I would have been more satisfied with a lot more of Marc's pages, sketches etc instead of 99% pin up art.

If pin up art is what you are looking for, you will love this book. However, if you are looking for doodles, sequential art and the like, this book may disappoint.

Speaking strictly of quality, the hardcover edition, which is the edition I purchased, is made of very nice heavy stock paper and is bound well. A high quality product. No doubt it will withstand multiple flip viewings. It comes in at nearly 100 pages.

Keep an eye out for sales on this book. You can usually find the hard cover edition for around $20.

4.0 out of 5 stars Want MORE!! Dec 17 2012
By Erps
It is a GREAT book showcasing a VERY SMALL portion of Marc Silvestri's long running career in the top tier of the comic world. I have been a big fan of Marc for over 20 years and have always liked his work. I am so happy about the existence of this book. Unfortunately, this book is under 100 pages and artworks are split into two, one showing the black and white pencils and the other page the full colour version. Also slip in some pages of write-ups of other people about Marc. In the end, it is a handful of amazing work that will guarantee you wanting MORE.

As a reference, Jim Lee, another great artist and writer who started his career well after Marc, has a book hitting almost the 300 page mark.

I hope they would consider releasing another Silvestri art book with more meat in it to chew on. This, is like one strip of bacon...never enough. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoy this book July 18 2014

I really enjoy this book! Has excellent artwork from Silvestri. However it is not very long, certainly not like Jim Lee's Icons book so don't expect a crap ton of pages to gawk at.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Pricey but Gorgeous Art Jan. 27 2009
By Tim Janson - Published on Amazon.com
Marc Silvestri was among the half-dozen or so artists who broke away from the mainstream to form Image Comics in 1992. In many ways, this move was one of the many factors that led to the comic book industry "Jumping the shark" in the mid-90s. Hot artists became the rage and soon the stories became secondary. Fans clamored for heroes with bigger muscles and women with disproportionately large boobs, and Image was a hit. The biggest loss, however, wasn't Todd McFarlane, the coattail-riding Erik Larsen, or the insipid Rob Liefeld, it was instead two other artists who were not quite as well-known at the time, Jim Lee and Marc Silvestri.

Early on in their Image runs Lee and Silvestri developed super team titles (WildC.A.T.S & Cyberforce) that while not particularly outstanding, showcased artistic talent that was beyond the rest of their partners. Under the Top Cow Imprint, Silvestri co-created one of the most popular and long-running characters outside of Marvel and DC, Witchblade in 1995. A year later, he created another stalwart Top Cow character, The Darkness.

Top Cow has released the Art of Marc Silvestri, a 96 page, over-sized hardcover showcasing his art throughout different periods of twenty year career in comics. The first chapter is simply titled "The Icons" and focuses on his Top Cow characters. Most of the pieces in the book provide side-by-side comparisons between the penciled and finished versions of the illustration. The design of the Witchblade "costume" remains one of the more ingenious in history.

Next up is the "Classic Covers" chapter and includes several of Marc's most famous cover art illustrations including the Wolverine crucifixion from X-Men #251 and the cross-overs between Batman and the Darkness and the JLA/Cyberfoce team-up.

The book rounds out with selected works from Dynamite Entertainment, Image Comics, and recent Top Cow work. These include illustrations of Red Sonja, Aphrodite IX, Hunter-Killer, and Wanted. One of the more intriguing illustrations is actually the last one in the book. A commissioned pencil drawing not of a superhero or one of Silvestri's well-known characters, but rather a portrait of a middle-ages or Renaissance-era woman.

It's a welcome change to see Marc doing a classical piece of illustration and it's extraordinary. It's the kind of work that could be considered on the same par with illustrators such as Roy Krenkel, J. Allen St. John, or Burne Hogarth. I think fans would love to see more of this kind of work from Silvestri as it displays his pure talent and shows that he is much more than just a comic book artist.

The $29.95 price tag seems a bit steep considering the book is just 96 pages and, as mentioned, you are getting quite a few comparison pages between the penciled and finished product so the number of different pieces if fewer than the page count. That said, it's great to see Silvestri get a dedicated collection of his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful artistic fantasy Nov. 17 2009
By Michael R. Beatty - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a huge fan of fantasy art. You can take pictures of people and everyday events all you want, but the art in this book is of things straight out of the imagination. That is true creativity. Don't discount this as just comic book art, it is well done and will be appreciated by those who have an eye for detail. Marc Silvestri has obvious talent, but I was put off by the endorsements of his underlings and co-workers, seemed kind of patronizing. Art speaks for itself; and should have been left to it's own story. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this book says volumes. Most all the finished colored pictures has a black and white drawing that it came from. It will help you appreciate not only the creativity that it took to make the drawing, but also the skill it took to colorize it. Most images have a dark theme and some contain sensuality. This is probably not for younger children, but teens who show an interest in art will probably be inspired by this book. Highly recommended.
3.0 out of 5 stars Good for comic art collection, not much other insights. Jan. 31 2014

Great collection of art from the series from Top Cow. THATS ALL THERE IS. No additional insights abt the pics, only 'letters' from other artists on Marc Silvestri.

If you like collecting samples of comic art, this may be one of them. Browse first tho.
4.0 out of 5 stars If you love Awesome artwork, buy this. Dec 1 2013

I am an aspiring comic book artist and a fan of Marc Silvestri's work and this was a great purchase for me. It details a nice amount of Marc's artwork ranging from Marvel, DC and to Top Cow. This book shows off a lot of Marc's un-inked pencils which gives the reader and better idea of how detailed and beautiful Marc Silvestri's artwork is. My only issue with the book is that it would have been great if they would have included some interviews with Marc so we could understand his creative process on certain pieces. The other thing is that this book is over priced. For what they charge for the Hard Cover you should receive a bio about Marc Silvestri, interviews from co works and others in the industry and the history of Top Cow. Ultimately I love great artwork so I purchased the TPB and I am glad that I did. If anything I think that Marc Silvestri's work is under appreciated and if you choose to purchase this book you will understand why I feel that way.
