Product Description

Ask anyone who knows the medium, and that person will say Greg Capullo is the "comic artist's artist!" This collection features many never before seen pieces and a behind the scenes tutorial. This stunning collection of drawings and paintings finally removes the text and logos from all the covers, and lets you take a good long look at the art itself. A must for any Spawn or comic art fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and delightful, Jan 13 2010

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (HALL OF FAME)
This review is from: Art Of Greg Capullo (Paperback)
Length:: 0:23 Mins

The book is a collection of some of his cover works, notably Sam and Twitch, and Spawn, other titles, unpublished works and some personal pieces such as the one on the cover page.

The art is fantastic, especially the Spawn art, which are deadly. The use of blacks and lighting is great. I like the back portion of the book which features more of the comic art drawings, with coloured filled onto the fantastic line art.

Most of the art here are digital with the last 20 pages on black and white sketches. There are strangely no comic book panels featured. For many of the illustrations, which are the covers, they are printed to fill a page, with a smaller version on the opposite page. The smaller version is exactly the same, which is really redundant and could have been replaced with the pre-coloured ink sketches, or even more art.

I've also read that there are some issues with the binding for the paperback, specifically the glue holding the book together. Mine's the hardcover version and doesn't have that problem.

Overall it's still a pretty nice book for the fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very cool book but misses the mark a little bit..., Mar 16 2007
By Donna M. Travers - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Art Of Greg Capullo (Hardcover)
I am a huge Greg Capullo fan and I have missed seeing his work regularly so I was very excited to get this book. The book has nice production values and does feature some wonderful work from a fantastic artist but I feel it didn't quite capture the scope of Capullo's talent.

For my taste, the book gives too much space to Greg's recent digital paintings and not enough attention to his pencil work and traditional comic book art. There is not one single sequential page from any of Greg's large body of comics work reproduced in this book. Also, covers are re-produced simply with text removed and occasional small thumbnails of the original pencils. Those original pencils should be full page and shown alongside the finished published cover! I think the lack of comics work featured here is a great error considering much of Greg's career has been built on his incredible interior page work on Spawn and other titles. To see Greg's original pencils, or even inked versions, would have been a great thing and certainly fitting in a book titled The Art of Greg Capullo.

I am not saying Capullo's recent painted work is not good, it is, but I don't think it has the same energy and appeal of his traditional covers and pages.

There is a very cool sketch section at the end that features some great pencil and ink drawings, though some of it is a bit disturbing and probably wouldn't be great for kids to be looking at.

Overall, Capullo is an amazing artist, no doubt, so having a nice collection of his work is well worth it. I'm just stating my personal opinion as a long-time fan of Greg's work that this book didn't cover enough of what makes him so great. I hope they do more volumes collecting his work in the future or someone puts together a sketchbook featuring his original pencils for covers and pages, that's what I want to see more of. Also, I can't wait for Spawn/Batman, Greg's return to sequential art!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad as for a paperback, Dec 17 2008
By Damian Bajowski - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Art Of Greg Capullo (Paperback)
My only complain is the quality of the glue holding it together. You have to turn pages very carefully if don't want to damage the book. I think Greg's art deserves something better. I do realize that this is economy paperback soft cover edition but still I think it could be done way better. As for the content the print quality is very good, and the artworks show the evolution of Greg Capullo as an artist. There's also his commentary for several images plus a fully illustrated step by step tutorial covering how to create your own piece of art. To sum up, book is worth the price even it's not a perfect edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE VERY BEST TODAY!, Dec 31 2007
By Tim Janson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Art Of Greg Capullo (Paperback)
As a big fan of comic book art I always love to see comic artists get their just do recognition as fine artists with collections of their art. Greg Capullo has impressed me for a long, long time with his amazing covers for Spawn at Image Comics. Image has now released The Art of Greg Capullo, showcasing his amazing talent. The book displays many of those great Spawn covers but also includes a fair amount of previously unpublished artwork. The unreleased material was never seen because Capullo had deemed it "not good enough for print." There's a lot of artists who would kill to be able to draw as well as Capullo's "unfit" material! His painted covers for Spawn show just how much he has matured as a fine artist from his more traditional art work. He's shown exquisite skill in mastering lighting and shading techniques which is evident in the painted cover section.

A great example is his painting of Twitch of Sam & Twitch fame in a painting called "Glint of Steel." Here we see Twitch in heavy shadows, with only a fraction of his profile, and his handgun showing. It's remarkable sublte and yet bold at the same time. In fact, I think I may be even more impressed with his Sam & Twitch paintings than his Spawn pieces. With Spawn, he can let his imagination run wild in Spawn's nightmare world but Sam & Twitch are rooted in reality and thus Capullo makes these two cops bigger than life with his unique renderings. Another great piece is the cover to Casefiles # 15, as Twitch's gun looks like it extends for about five feet with Capullo's uniquely andgled perspective. There's a selction of earlier Spwan covers done in traditional comic art style and the book concludes with Capullo taking readers through his step-by-step process for his paintings, starting with a rough sketch which is scanning into Painter. Capullo then proceeds to work in layers with the digital program until is is complete. It's a great hands-on instruction for younger readers. Terrific book!
