This set contains the first three books in the Artemis Fowl series. Eoin Colfer is a master at writing fast paced, entertaining stories. His characters are amazing, particularly for a children's series. They start out very static in the first book, but the development as the series progresses is refreshing to find. Most authors for younger audiences do not bother to advance their character's at all and simply rely on an extravagant plot to capture their audience. But as a further bonus the stories themselves are no less engaging despite the obvious focus on the characters. In fact the progression, and maturation of Colfer's writing in each subsequent book is a welcome change to most series that tend to peak early and then steadily decline towards their end.

Anyone who enjoys the genre of fantasy/supernatural should purchase these books. Though they are short and obviously for a juvenile audience, the series is surprisingly entertaining for people of all ages. If you're not looking for a profound, life changing narrative, you can just enjoy the good-natured humor, and fast paced action.

Gift Dec 22 2011

This was a gift.

My sister, who is in her teens, loves this series. It's one of her favorites. She also enjoys books like Harry Potter, to which this is similar except the main character is a super villain. I looked everywhere to find a good price on a box set. Looks like this place gives the best deal for 3-book set. There used to be another set but that one was priced a LOT higher per book.

If you are going to collect books, I would recommend getting all 3 here. It's cheaper than buying the 3 books individually or buying this set in most other places unless you get it used.

Opening doors for discussing choices in life Nov. 25 2011

I heard the author interviewed on NPR. I liked the way he talked about writing for young people. My grandson is 9 and can easily read these himself. However, the opportunity to continue reading to him does so many things beyond the story. We stop and discuss the possible reasons for making a dicision, what the outcome might be, how would he handle this particular situation. He continues to set records for reading the most books at his school. Books like these keep him excited about each new adventure. He is anxious to order to remaining books in this series. His teacher asked to borrow the first three books over the coming holiday.

Great book for anyone, age 9 and up. Pure fun & laughs, too. A great alternative to the "Harry Potter" books.

Pretty good. April 6 2013

Format: Paperback
These books were great. I picked one up over winter break and I was so happy I had finally found a book that was actually good. I had fun watching Artemis grow and change as he struggled with being a good kid or getting rich and I loved how the author gave him a family full of interesting characters, too. It was an interesting plot line and a great story.
My two problems with it:
1. The evil business man thing comes up in these books a lot. I think Artemis is such a great character, and he deserves a better adversary than a stereotype villain.
2. The author never fully explains the characters plans until they are put into effect, so sometimes it's hard to tell what is actually happening from what is just explanation.
