Product Description

Review

This book presents a fascinating snapshot of the scientific dialogue that may one day overtake philosophy in resolving long-standing questions about the grounds of moral behavior.
Free Inquiry

Danielson addresses a very important philosophical issue, i.e., how to strike a balance between rationality and morality. . . . His style is elegant.

Book Description

This book explores the role of artificial intelligence in the development of a claim that morality is person-made and rational. Professor Danielson builds moral robots that do better than amoral competitors in a tournament of games like the Prisoners Dilemma and Chicken. The book thus engages in current controversies over the adequacy of the received theory of rational choice. It sides with Gauthier and McClennan, who extend the devices of rational choice to include moral constraint. Artificial Morality goes further, by promoting communication, testing and copying of principles and by stressing empirical tests.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooperation: The Simulations Continue..., Dec 22 2009

This review is from: Artificial Morality: Virtuous Robots for Virtual Games (Paperback)
Artificial Morality: Virtuous Robots for Virtual Games (1992) came between Axelrod's "The Evolution of Cooperation "The Evolution of Cooperation (1984)" and later "The Complexity of Cooperation: Agent-Based Models of Competition and Collaboration (1997)" (I haven't read "The Evolution of Cooperation: Revised Edition (2006)" yet).
Danielson delves deeper into details of explorations into the "Prisoner's Dilemma" with many variations on a theme. This book is a wonderful companion to the two books above. Short examples are illustrated in Prolog for the more geek minded, but that is not necessary to enjoy and understand the material presented.
