Product Description

From Amazon.com

You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now…and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. More than others of her reality-show insta-star ilk, Ashlee Simpson's is an autobiography that shouts, "bring on the sequel." --Tammy La Gorce

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay material, horrible voice, Aug 10 2005

This review is from: Ashlee Simpson:Autobiography (Audio CD)
I'm not just "hating on Ashlee because she's a celebrity sibling who has no talent". I bought this CD and I listened to it a fair bit before making up my mind about it. What I decided is; the songs are generic pop/rock with a bit of edge and some catchy riffs. Ashlee's voice is like long nails on a blackboard. Want to talk style over substance? This album is packaged and put together well; it shows Ashlee as the bad Simpson sister because she has a rock edge. That "edge" is screechy, barely listenable vocals and a lot of effected wailing and pronounciations. Her voice is enough to drive one crazy and the songs that "they" wrote for her would have been better off for somebody else with a softer, better voice. Yes, according to the liner notes, she was the one who penned these songs. Do you believe everything you read? I don't think this girl is capable of intelligent songwriting and although these songs aren't Sylvia Plath or Robert Frost or something, they certainly weren't written by this annoying brat, and I don't care what they tell me. The bottom line is; buy this CD. If your taste is ecclectic and discriminating, you will listen to it for about two weeks and it'll end up sitting in the case in your CD rack. There are REAL "rocker teens" out there, and Ashlee just ain't one of them no matter how hard she fakes it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ashlee's Autobiography, Nov 29 2004

This review is from: Ashlee Simpson:Autobiography (Audio CD)
Okay, so yeah Ashlee took advantage of her position to make an album. So what? I would have had less respect for her had she not. She's obviously not stupid. And after hearing this album, she's obviously not that bad either. Whether or not she would have gotten a record deal without the help of Papa Joe is nul and void. We're here to talk about the music, not the personal triumphs of the Simpson family in general.

For a fan of rock music, Autobiography was a stretch for me. I actually burned it just to be safe. What I heard wasn't a simple-lyric, melodramatic sop-fest as I had been expecting. Instead I heard lyrics that were, to be honest, not that bad. I mean, they're not McCartney/Lennon or anything but you know, not terrible. Musically I'm not sure how much we can really attribute to Ashlee. While she may have had some say in what the song sounded like, it's hard to really know how much of the music she wrote. Having said this, the tunes are catchy and the melodies are decent, though not complex. Played accoustically with no lyrics, they would be pretty boring. But that's the good thing about Ashlee's lyrics. They're pretty good - and she wrote a good deal of them herself, which is sometimes hard to find in artists of her genre.

Comparing Ashlee to Courtney Love, as some have, is a bit of a stretch. She hasn't quite gotten to the drug and alcohol-induced public displays of...well, everything. Obviously it's vocally where the resemblences are made, and perhaps with SOME grounding, but not much. Don't buy this to hear the new Hole, you'll be pissed off.

In conclusion, Ashlee's first release is surprisingly rock-esque with a pop backdrop. A nice album, to be honest. It doesn't harm anyone and it's certainly not worth getting bent out of shape about. Save that for Simple Plan.

Three and a half stars.
