Way ahead of its time April 9 2010
By Lawrence G. S. Williams TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Really, the title says it all. Asia released this album at the tail end of the whole arena rock movement popularized by bands like Journey, Boston, and Foreigner. While their sound owes some to those bands, it also includes a number of truly visionary elements.

Listening to the album, I am constantly picking out sounds and structures that are still now being hailed as innovative. For example, for some reason I draw comparisons to Japanese metal band Sigh's opus "Imaginary Sonicscape", which was released in 2001 and praised for its avant-garde tendancies and innovation. In 2001. Nearly 20 years after Asia used these types of sounds and structures.

The opening track "Heat of the Moment" has become the band's signature tune, and for good reason; it's so amazing and catchy. On first listen, you will be hooked by the catchy guitar and vocal melodies. Upon future listens, you will realize how complex the song can be. The time signatures used are very unusual for rock music, and when they use typical signatures, they toy with things like accents instead (NOTE: not speech accents, obviously, but musical accents).

The rest of the tracks follow a similar pattern, which does, in the end, hurt the album as a whole. Nothing else really touches "Heat of the Moment", but they're all still innovative, catchy, and generally solid songs.

RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of Journey, Boston, Loverboy, Survivor, Foreigner, etc., fans of progressive rock like Rush, Yes, ELP, Dream Theater, fans of keyboard-heavy or avant-garde type music (while Asia obviously doesn't fit in this latter category, I still feel the album is rewarding to those types of fans)

Less is more Jun 15 2004
Format:Audio CD
Prog rock worriors got together to team up this project band. The main concept is "LESS IS MORE".That is no more meaningless guitar solos or keyboard solos. This strategy turned out to be very successful in Japan. The songs are so compact and commercial enough to capture listeners heart. This is the JOHM WETTONS's album and moreover WETTON'S composership reals his brilliant craftsmanship and his strong vocal expressiveness.

Interesting but not Reverred Jan 25 2004
Format:Audio CD
There are some interesting comments about the debut Asia record. Some folks praise it as a long lost classic. Others rip to shreds.

However, its the folks who take an even tempered stance are the ones who seem most practical to me. There are many creative instrumental passages on this record particularly from keyboardist Geoffrey Downes. However many of the songs are just a little too radio friendly with cliche laden lyrics. The overplayed singles-Here Comes That Feeling, Only Time Will Tell, and The Heat Of The Moment are mildly creative in small doses and a bit patience trying with the overplay that they did receive.

Soul Survivor is probably the most captivating of the nine album tracks. I enjoy the lyrics, keyboard passages, and the steady drumming. Wildest Dreams has an interesting style and One Step Closer and Cutting It Fine have some memorable moments.

Therefore the impression of this record is a decent one but not a reverred classic that will stand the test of time. Truthfully I prefer Asia's follow up record, Alpha as the atmosphere stands out even more and the lyrics are less cliche driven. Nonetheless, a 3-3 1/2 star rating seems fair.
