Book Description

Oct. 14 2008

Who killed Indira Gandhi? We know the name of the assassins, but did they act alone? In this fictional filmscript, Tariq Ali provocatively hints that larger forces were at work, exploiting genuine Sikh grievances to settle their own score with a Prime Minister who, whatever her faults, was fiercely independent of Washington and safe guarded Indian sovereignty with a zeal inherited from her father. Timely in light of Benazir Bhutto’s recent assassination, this script, planned as the second of a series, was never completed. The Assassination is published here for the first time and completes Ali’s trilogy, with The Leopard and The Fox and A Banker For All Seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable. Should be read by anyone concerned with South Asian politics and the machinations of the US March 13 2014

Even if this were a fictional play, it would be very readable. As it concerns one of the 'earth-shattering' events in recent Indian history, whose repercussions were felt by millions of Sikhs and Hindus for decades, it is indispensable. The Silkh community paid a very heavy price for the actions of a handful, but the real perpetrators of this assassination are barely recognized. Mr. Ali covers every conceivable angle, playing no favourites as the plausible motives and actions of the various parties - Pakistani, Sikh, Indian, and the US, are covered. An apparent 'coup d'etat' committed by the 'Washington Consensus', getting rid of a nasty thorn in their side, a defiant, independent Indian Prime Minister, in her own way a far more 'iron' lady than the better known counterpart.

I love Tariq Ali. Being born in the same year, the same country, and leaving for the UK around the same time, I have pursued his consistent devotion and action on human rights worldwide. His knowledge of history and current events is incredible, but more endearing to me is the way he presents all sides of an issue. I simply admire the man that Tariq Ali is.
