Great for all ages,
This review is from: Asterix Omnibus 1 (Paperback)
I read lots of comics as a child, but never knew these existed. They weren't in the library when I worked shelving books as a teenager. I discovered these when my children read them and loved the way the books have such clever names. My only regret is not being able to read them in French. My youngest son, at the age of 5 and a decided fan even at that age, was nearly pushed under Uderzo's feet at a bookshop in town due to the press of people keen to see Uderzo do illustrations from the books. My son and another little boy were rewarded with their own, hand drawn and signed, large black marker drawing of Asterix. Treasured ever since.

As Good As Remembered,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Asterix Omnibus 1 (Paperback)
I grew up reading Asterix comics, but it'd been several years since I'd seen it. And I'd never owned any of the Astrix comics. So I pre-ordered this, and settled down to wait. And wait. And wait. I waited long enough that its shipment came as a surprise - and its timing was excellent, as I had no other preorders shipping that week, giving me time to re-read it. This was as good as I remember it being. In fact, I'll be ordering Volume 2 and pre-ordering Volume 3 as soon as I get paid. The art is charming and the text is amusing. As someone who is involved with several French-to-English translation projects, I am all the more amazed at the ability of the translators to maintain the verbal humor without extensive awkwardness or footnoting. Not only that, but the humor has held up extremely well over the 50+ year history of Asterix. There or occasional dated references, but they are few and far between. This book is heartily recommended. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

Asterix Amazing,
By Kidcotton09 - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Asterix Omnibus 1 (Paperback)
If you have never read this...go out and get it. What a fabulous story for children of all ages. My husband adored it too and the children had to fight to read it. A rollicking good tale with lots of humour and cartoon form make these stories very appealing. You won't regret the purchase. Go for it!

UA read an Asterix comic book maybe 35 years ago while visiting in Canada. I remember laughing like crazy. But I could not fine a copy near home, ever. But I never forgot it. I did forget the title over the years, but never the theme, ancient Gaul (50 BC) superheros (not gods) fighting, toying with the Roman armies. Finally it occurred to me to ask me Austrian textpal if he had heard about it, having search for years in vane. He just so happen to have a complete collection, in German of course, and since then I have bought all 33 editions. They are full of word play, names of characters to match there profile. In fact some names I had to use a dictionary to find out the reasoning, English is not my strong suit, and i had to read each story twice to soak in every deal, but it was Very worth it. Great humor. Fantastic art work. I know of no American comic book that comes close (the author and artist are French) in content and quality. April 2012 update I just read one of my old National Geographical; and it turns out that there is a lot of Celtic history in this fiction, as well as a spin on Celtic myth. It makes my love for this comic series all the more . . . worthwhile (no words come to convey the significance of the added fact) |
