ambitious blending of styles,
By
This review is from: At the Hotel (Two-Disc Unrated Edition) (DVD)
This is an ambitious blend of comedy and mystery employing different styles in writing and period. The hotel setting is gorgeous, and this 6 part series showing the eventual interaction of guests, employees, writer and detective, looks good. At the heart of the story is both a murder investigation of the past, paralleled with one in the present. Some characters and story-lines are more interesting than others. Personally, I really enjoyed some of the humour and music (yes, every once and awhile there's a song), but the mystery wasn't all that engaging. Perhaps I expected a faster pace or something of more substance from writer-director Ken Finkleman (Newsroom). Unfortunately, the dvd extras are minimal - basic notes on Finkleman and The Players. (On the dvd-rom which I didn't explore - screensaver, wallpapers, set inspiration & trailers).
