I never would have bought a covers CD, ala Rod Stewart, Bette, and who ever else thinks they can do justice to some dusty classics, if it wasn't Cyndi Lauper as the voice behind the music. I have to be honest. That's what a reviewer is supposed to do. Cyndi lifts these songs and breathes new life into them. Her pipes are a spectacular instrument, that can take a song I truly hate like the overplayed, into the ground, Unchained Melody, from the film "Ghost" and have me in tears. She strips the original music arrangement down to a mininum, and except for a spare and quiet piano arranement and strings, its Cyndi's voice that dominates the music. It's emotionally effecting and absolutely breathtaking. All the ballads from Hymn To Love and the glorious At Last get the same treatment. There are a couple songs that she could of left off like Making Whoopee with Tony Bennett(cute, but not a favorite of mine, and the jazz inflected My Baby just cares for me). But those are minor complaints, that doesn't interrupt the rest of these outstanding reworked classic songs. This was an experiment that Cyndi has wanted to try for years, and has paid off nicely. But I hope Cyndi goes back to her all self-penned songs on her next CD. That is where her incredible talent belongs.
