Product Description

In a he said, she said story, the writer always gets the last word.

She is a writer, established and successful, with a full life and supportive friends. Then he walks into a book signing and back into her life 30 years after he broke her heart. This time, things seem different. The pair reconnects through emails, messages and fragments of conversation. But love leaves her with a nasty case of writer's block. Looking for inspiration in the texts around her--optimistic horoscopes, evasive fortune cookies and the inane suggestions from books on writer's block--she tries to find a way through the relationship that has seemingly stolen her gift for language. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

Spinning us through the whirlwind love of her nameless protagonist, award-winning author Diane Schoemperlen weaves a stylish, innovative novel out of to-do lists and text messages. Exploring the different emotional languages spoken by men and women, At A Loss For Words is a charming take on the modern romance, warm and witty right through to its surprising and delicious resolution. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diane's words ring almost embarrasingly true..and funny., May 17 2008
Not since Bridget Jones have I seen a character so true to herself.
At first found the constant'you said, i said, annoying, but grew to love our leading lady immensely. The simple to do list the author has given our heroine to get out of her depression out of losing the love of her life end up being incredibly entertaining and hilarious. Every woman I know thinks like our heroine, but we would hate to admit we do! I enjoyed it so much, I read it again and found it twice as amusing as the first time. Whether you have been in a long distance relationship or not, everyone does the e-mail on line flirtatious chat thing. And Diane does it amusingly well...

3.0 out of 5 stars Love and Loss, Mar 16 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
I found At a Loss for Words both a very sad book and also a very inspirational book. It took me a while to get used to the writing style and a number of pages to really get into the book. However, once I starting reading it like the writer's diary, I enjoyed it more and wanted to know what transpired in the rekindled relationship. I liked the way the book flowed together so easily without any chapters. This book reminded me of every time I have fallen in love and the evolution so many of those relationships go through - the euphoric high and the devastating loss. And then the road to recovery with the help of friends. This is a book to which every woman - and likely every man - can identify.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and entertaining read about the perils of an online relationship, Mar 14 2008
By Amy MacDougall (Mississauga, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This short novel may leave some women flinching and/or chuckling as they recognize themselves in Schoemperlen's sassy fortysomething female narrator. Written in an engaging and highly readable stream of consciousness style, readers follow the unnamed narrator's journey in a rekindled relationship, from the exhuberant exhilaration of the first months to the obsessive second-guessing later stages. The fresh twist in this novel is that most of the contact between the narrator and her would-be love interest occurs via email. The novel is a fun and quick read, although at times I found myself shaking my head in frustration (and possibly empathy), at the narrator's cluelessness and denial about her boyfriend's actions and, at times, his inactions. The narrator's ultimate conclusion about her mate does give the reader some satisfaction and closure. If you have ever overanalyzed a relationship you've been in, this slender novel is sure to make you smile. [Amy MacDougall]
