5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it. It's better than you think Aug. 16 2013

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is more fun than I anticipated. It was easy to get into. And now that I have completed a certain number of stages there is now so much incentive to keep grinding them, either offline or over the net that story progression has taken a back seat. Continuing on to a consecutive random stage instead of returning to town to repair equipment and cash-in will add multipliers to the subsequent rewards. But this game is designed for endless play, anyways. Whether it is simply collecting loot and improving your equipment or redoing the story as another character class. As an action RPG this game is to side-scroller beat-em-ups what Borderlands is to first-person shooters. The only problem is that when the screen fills with action I am constantly losing track of my position. However, even in the mess of screen activity it's a joy to participate in the button-mashing fun, doing my part to fell a boss monster. Watch for the humour. Some of the enemies are silly, and one boss fight is taken directly from Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail.

Nevermind the supposed controversy over the artwork. It is inspired by Western fantasy art with a Japanese twist and it is not lurid. In fact, hi-res paintings are rewarded for completing side quests and these things are something to behold!

Update: Having both the PS3 and PS Vita versions I can say that on the surface they appear identical but the PS3 version is more ergonomic, faster, and more responsive. Rapid button tapping doesn't seem to register on the Vita. The touchscreen doesn't add much value over the other controls either. Playing co-op with strangers over the internet should be considered for recreation since those quests tend to be less productive than local or offline gameplay. This game would have benefitted from having a method to communicate messages like "Go there," or "Wait for me!"

Dragon's Crown is Vanillaware's take on the classic fantasy action-RPGs of old. A 2D co-op fantasy RPG-brawler, it's Golden Axe for the modern age, and - while remarkably light on story, considering the developer - the best action game they've ever produced.

The game's Normal difficulty can be bested in a scant twenty hours as you wander through enchanted forests and haunted, vampire-infested castles - you'll battle goblins, orcs, zombies, pirates, owlbears and of course, dragons - but you can easily invest over 100 hours in a single character across the game's three progressively more-rewarding difficulty levels.

It is in Hard Mode and beyond that Dragon's Crown reveals its true intentions and true beauty. Unlike Vanillaware's previous efforts, which had good (Odin Sphere) or great action (Muramasa) while leaning heavily on an involving narrative, Dragon's Crown's pleasures lie entirely in the playing of it. In grinding beautiful, familiar dungeons for an ever-expanding collection of sweet, sweet random loot and kitting out your hero.

Each of the six character classes play beautifully while being vastly different from each other - each requiring time and investment to truly master - not that you'll want to switch when you've found one that you really groove with.

My Amazon is level 99, but I don't feel close to finished with her. I still love chaining twenty dungeons in a row (there are only nine total, unless you count the 99-floor randomly-generated Chaos Labyrinth) just for the sake of playing it. Just for the beauty of it - just for the fun of wrecking goblin armies and slaying dragons.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great game Dec 12 2013
By David
Platform for Display:PLAYSTATION 3|Verified Purchase
The game feels like a Dungeon and Dragon game. You start at the tavern, you equip your stuff and you go for the adventure. The action is like the old 2D slashing, you may mount creatures or equip weapons with limited ammo in certain area. The pacing of the loot is good and the difficulty progress is surprising, the opponents have better moves as you progress. It took me 24hours to play the normal difficulty with one caracter.

4.0 out of 5 stars The return of the beat-em-up Sept. 11 2013
By A Customer
Platform for Display:PLAYSTATION 3|Verified Purchase
I was a bit unsure about purchasing Dragon's Crown, but I'm glad I did. I bought Dragon's Crown to play something new, lately it's shooters everywhere so I thought I'd take a trip to the classics (beat-em-ups) to find something new. This game is beautiful: the environments, characters, and effects just gush detail with a excellent over the top art style to tie it together. The game play is excellent all around with quite a lot to do. I recommended playing online or local coop to make the game even better though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game Sept. 10 2013
Platform for Display:PLAYSTATION 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game to play with my wife and friends, and so far everyone really seems to be very happy with it, and the only gripes I've heard have all been fixed in the updates.

It's an excellent game that keeps fresh as you play by constantly adding new aspects as you continue to play gradually. The characters themselves reflect difficulty levels, so you can easily make the game more or less difficult based on skill level.

The artwork is terrific (and typical of Vanillaware). It can be over the top at times, but that's how Vanillaware intended it. To be honest I like how flabbergasted it makes some of the guests who have never seen a Vanillaware game before.

My only real gripe is with how inventory and skills are managed, as only one character can do these activities at a time. It strikes me that for a game like this, something akin to the Secret of Mana system would have been much more appropriate, and would dramatically cut down the time in between adventures.

Beyond that, if you have friends, buy this game!
