--Philippe Margotin

Product Description

US LP pressing. Eric Clapton adopted a new, tougher, hard R&B approach on 'August,' employing a stripped-down band featuring keyboard player Greg Phillinganes, bassist Nathan East, and drummer/producer Phil Collins, plus, on several tracks, a horn section. Guest artists appeared on a couple of tracks, including backup vocals by Tina Turner, and performing songs written by old Motown hand Lamont Dozier, among others. The leadoff track 'It's in the Way That You Use It,' was written by Clapton and Robbie Robertson for Robertson's score to the film 'The Color of Money.' Elsewhere, Clapton sang and played fiercely on songs like 'Tearing Us Apart,' 'Run,' and 'Miss You.' 'August' reached gold status in less than six months, Clapton's best commercial showing since 1981's 'Another Ticket.' The title commemorates the birth in August 1986 of Clapton's son Conor.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent cd. Jan 1 2004

I believe alot of people are giving this cd a bad review because they like the Clapton of the 70s without the synthesizers. In my opinion, this is an excellent cd. Sure, there are a few songs that aren't so good. Hey, nobody is perfect! There is nothing wrong with a synthesizer as long as guitars and drums accompany it. Buy this cd. It is highly underrated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Appealing But Formulaic AOR April 20 2003
Format:Audio CD
With AUGUST, Eric Clapton continued to work in the glossy mainstream rock direction he had pursued with his previous album, BEHIND THE SUN, this time adding more R&B flourishes into the overall mix. Not coincidentally, this album suffered from the same problems that BEHIND THE SUN did: the synthesizer/drum machine production is way too hollow, slick and dated; and the band, while in top form, is too heavy on occasion, overpowering the quality of the songs and especially Clapton's voice- which, even though it doesn't sound bad in this setting, has been through greener pastures.

Now, this glossy production, despite its flaws, is arguably not as bad as some people may think. Granted, the majority of fans did not like this version of Clapton, but in retrospect, it's interesting to hear Clapton pursue this direction and try to keep up with the times. But ultimately, the project ends up being less than it could have been. The stilted production may play a factor in that, but the relative failure of AUGUST is largely because the songwriting is, for the most part, undistinguished. The set does get off to a good start with "It's in the Way That You Use It" and "Tearing Us Apart," but it soon relies on the production alone to carry the project to the end, so the rest of the songs, with the exception of "Miss You," turn out as bland and forgettable. And that's a shame, really, since a few of these songs had the potential to be standout album tracks, and those said three songs could have actually made more noise on top 40 radio. But this is all essentially just average Clapton, meaning casual fans would be better served by finding some of these songs on a greatest hits collection.

"August" may be one of Clapton's least popular recordings. At times the mid-'80s production is a bit too slick. And it is pop. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good songs and some dated production.
I am not a typical Clapton fan. In fact, I will confess, this is the only cd of his that I own.

The lead off track It's In The Way That You Use It has to be the best songs... Read more
