From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Katherine Kellgren gives a marvelous performance in this entertaining chick lit/romance about 30-something Jane, who fantasizes about Jane Austen's heroes (particularly Mr. Darcy) while her real-life relationships flounder. She gets the tantalizing chance for a two-week holiday at an exclusive English estate where guests can experience Regency England, complete with Austenesque actors to romance them. Kellgren creates the perfect voice for each character—she's absolutely hilarious as Miss Charming, a 50-something Southern woman who tries desperately to put on a British accent and fails miserably; she's appropriately arrogant yet compelling as the attractive Mr. Nobly. As the boyishly charming Jasper, a gardener from Sheffield, Kellgren is more than up to the challenge of a very tricky accent to pull off. Kellgren brings wonderful acting to her performance, conveying Jane's conflicting emotions: thrilled at living out her fantasy while simultaneously embarrassed and self-conscious at being so silly and school-girlish. This is perfect summer beach listening for fans of chick lit, romance or Jane Austen.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—Thirty-three-year-old Jane Hayes, who has a fairly serious addiction to the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice, inherits a trip to Pembrook Park, Kent, England, the location of a resort where guests dress, talk, think, and act in ways that Jane Austen would approve. Refusing to lie about her age, even on vacation in a place right out of Austen's England, Jane finds herself quickly overcoming the obsession with Mr. Darcy that may very well have jeopardized her 13 "relationships" over the years. Left to walk in last to dinner, mildly obsessed with one of the hotel's gardeners, and annoyed by another guest's overeager attempts to bag a man, Jane is eager to return to Manhattan. Then she decides to give it all one more chance, since Great-Aunt Carolyn did see fit to pay for the entire vacation. Hale does a lovely job with the tale of a single woman who would appreciate a genuine shot at love. The book is well written, quite readable, and the myriad characters, especially those working at the resort, are quirkily funny. Given the immense popularity of Jane Austen's novels among teen girls, this book definitely has cross-over appeal.—Sarah Krygier, Solano County Library, Fairfield, CA

2.0 out of 5 stars Austenland, Jan 5 2009

This review is from: Austenland (Paperback)
"Austenland" by Shannon Hale is about a New York woman named Jane who is obsessed with Colin Firth who plays Mr. Darcy in the BBC adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice". Jane's wealthy aunt leaves Jane a trip to a resort in England that caters to Austen obsessed fans. Jane's experience at this resort tends to be a bit more realistic then she was expecting and in the end she may end up with her own Mr. Darcy.

Being a fan of "Pride and Prejudice" both the book and the BBC adaptation, I just had to read this book. I did like it, but I found it lacking in depth and missing substance. It is a light hearted quick read, but if you are looking for the intensity and the beauty of conversation that is found in "Pride and Prejudice" you will be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jane Hayes -- kindred spirit, April 7 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Austenland (Hardcover)
I loved this book! I wanted to be Jane Hayes who played the part of Jane Ertswhile who played the part of Elizabeth Bennett. I loved all the interweaving layers of reality and fiction, of sincerity and acting... And the ending was JUST what I hoped for. Hooray!

Shannon Hale may not be Jane Austen, but she has accomplished what a lot of Jane Austen fans like me probably wish they had thought of first! She understands us because she is one of us -- and so is Jane Hayes -- so everything about this book just "clicks".

I started the book yesterday evening and finished it this morning, postponing almost all other responsibilities! And I don't want a sequel... I simply want to read it again. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Jan 5 2008
This review is from: Austenland (Hardcover)
Jane Hayes has a serious problem. And that problem is an obsession -- an obsession with Mr. Darcy, the immortal hero of Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

When a well-off great-aunt gives Jane a vacation to a Regency-era resort in England, Jane hopes she can finally overcome this obsession of hers. But as she finds herself dressed to the nines in time period apparel and flirting in true Austen fashion with the ever-charming male actors, fantasy and reality blend together until the two are indistinguishable.

This novel, while at times a little unbelievable, was wholly enjoyable and amusing. Not lacking in wit or intelligence, AUSTENLAND is a carefree and lighthearted story that will delight even the most die-hard Austen fans.
